And these nine, beginning with the erotic, consist in the maturation of the nine stable emotions beginning with love, serving as means to attain the four aims of life or being grounds for abandoning what is other than them, as appropriate. / Hence, because they are to be relished in such a form, they are designated by the technical term ‘aesthetic relish’ (rasa), based on a distinct mode of tasting. / In self-disparagement and the like, however, because such an object of relish is absent, the technical term ‘aesthetic relish’, which is based on a distinct occasion for application, does not apply. / But through the intention to express mere relishability, the application of the word ‘relish’ is uncontradicted even there, as in the case of sweet, sour, and so forth. / As has been said after enumerating the aesthetic relishes beginning with the erotic: “Their relish-nature is stated by teachers to be due to their being tasted, like sweet and other tastes; / since that is fully present in self-disparagement and the like as well, they too are aesthetic relishes.”
