When there is a composition in a single locus—either in the word alone, or in the sense alone—of many ornaments independent of each other, or of two such ornaments, the ornament is combination.
Where, however, there is mutual dependence, there the three commixtures (saṅkara)—the commixture of doubt, the commixture of expressing [two ornaments] by a single word, and the commixture of the favoured and the favourer—have been previously explained.
And where there is a composition of multiple ornaments resting upon the twofold basis characterized by word and sense, there too commixture of multiple ornaments residing in word and sense has been described.
Combination, however, is distinct from these.
