On "the hundred-square diagrammatic wheel" (cakraṃ śatapadam): I shall explain the hundred-square diagrammatic wheel, the diagrammatic wheel with one hundred cells. Of what kind is it? "Arising from the quarters of the asterisms and phonemes" (bhapādākṣasaṃbhavam): bha means lunar mansion; each of them has four divisions; it is produced from them, composed of them. Just as the quarters of the lunar mansions and zodiacal signs are to be known there from the initial phonemes of the names. On "transverse and vertical" (tiryagūrdhvagatā): the wise man should draw lines numbering Rudra, [namely] eleven in number, going horizontally and going vertically. When this is done, one hundred squares are produced. On "he should place [the phonemes] beginning with a, va, ha, ḍa" (nyasedavahaḍādīni): in order, successively, in the directions beginning with the northeast, one should arrange in order the five pure phonemes each, beginning with a-va-ka-ha-ḍa. The meaning of this is: beginning from the northeastern cell, in the five cells of the eastern row, he should write the pentad of phonemes, namely a-va-ka-ha-ḍa. In this manner, from the southeastern corner cell, in the southern row, [he should write] the five phonemes ma-ṭa-pa-ra-ta. From the southwestern corner cell, in the western row, he should write the five phonemes na-ya-bha-ja-ṣa. From the northwestern corner cell, in the northern row, he should write the five phonemes ga-śa-da-ca-la. On "from combination with the five vowels" (pañcasvarasamāyogāt): from combination with the five vowels, that is, from association and conjunction with them in the form of a, i, u, e, o, make each single consonant into five forms; as va, vi, vu, ve, vo; ka, ki, ku, ke, ko; ha, hi, hu, he, ho; ḍa, ḍi, ḍu, ḍe, ḍo;

ma, mi, mu, me, mo; and thus it should be understood further on too. In this way, in the places of ku, pu, bhu, and du, three phonemes are to be written: as in the square of the phoneme ku, the three phonemes gha, ṅa, cha are to be supplied; in place of the phoneme pu, kha, ṇa, ṭha; in place of the phoneme bhu, dha, pha, ḍha; in the square of the phoneme du, tha, bha, ña. When this is done, the phonemes of the hundred-square diagrammatic wheel are produced. 'ku-gha-ṅa-da' etc.: in the northeast domain, in the pillar situated in the northeastern direction, the phonemes ku, gha, ṅa, cha of the Ārdrā nakṣatra occur. Likewise in the pillar situated in the southeastern direction, the phonemes pū, kha, ṇa, ṭha of the Hasta nakṣatra occur. In the pillar situated in the southwestern direction, the phonemes bhū, dhā, phā, ḍhā of the Pūrvāṣāḍhā nakṣatra occur. In the northwestern corner pillar, du, tha, bha, ña of Uttarābhādrapadā occur. In this manner, each set of four phonemes is arranged according to the nakṣatras Ārdrā and so forth. The four pillars and the diagrammatic wheel must be known by the knowers of sounds.

[On the verse] 'dhiṣṇyāni…': Thus, with four phonemes each—by four phonemes each—including Abhijit, there are twenty-eight lunar mansions beginning with Kṛttikā. There, for each lunar mansion, there are four fractional divisions. In this way, there are one hundred and twelve fractional divisions, such as 'a, i, u, e' for Kṛttikā, 'o, va, vi, vu' for Rohiṇī, and so on up to Bharaṇī, making twenty-eight lunar mansions. [On the verse] 'yadṛkṣāṃśakakoṣṭhasthaḥ…': A malefic or benefic planet residing in a cell of a fractional division of a lunar mansion—from that cell of the fractional division of the lunar mansion in which it is positioned, it should pierce obliquely the first letter of the name of the man, the person. It should pierce the first phoneme of the name obliquely. Here, it should pierce the initial phoneme of the names of all living beings, regions, and so forth, beginning with humans. [On] 'saumyavedhe…': [it is] clear. [On] 'yaduktam…': [it is] easy to understand.
