one should not go to houses, etc., situated above or below a palace; this is to be affirmed. "Asks, etc.": If the stationary querent asks—makes an inquiry—targeting the fifth direction of the sound that has risen in order, then loss and so forth occur; there is no doubt in this. For example, on the second [tithi], due to the rise of 'i' in the southern direction, the eastern direction is set; the result standing therein is to be declared in this manner: such is the meaning.

atha tātkālikasvaravivaraṇam----
Now, the explanation of the temporary sound:
3.1.3.60
tithyadābudayaṃ yāti tithisvarāddhaṭikāsvaraḥ ||
bālasvarādikā praśne phalaṃ tasya vadāmyaham ||
When the tithi-sound rises on a tithi, the ghaṭikā-sound [arises] from the tithi-sound.
I shall declare the result of that in a query regarding the infant sound and the like.
3.1.3.61
tithibhuktaghapaṭīsaṃkhyāṃ kṛtvā palamayīṃ tataḥ ||
ṛkṣavahnihṛte śeṣe svarastatkālasambhavaḥ ||
Having converted the number of elapsed ghaṭīs of the tithi into palas,
when divided by asterisms and fires (27 and 3, i.e., 81), from the remainder the sound arising for that time [is found].
3.1.3.62
yamuddiśya kṛtaḥ praśnaḥ phalaṃ tasya prajāyate ||
yatra noddiśyate kiñcit tatra praṣṭuḥ śubhāśubham ||
In reference to whom the question is posed, the result arises for him.
Where nothing is specified, there [it indicates] good or bad for the querent.
3.1.3.63
bālodaye yadā pṛcchā lābhārthe svalpalābhadā ||
rugārte cirarogaṃ ca game hāniḥ kṣyaṃ raṇe ||
When an inquiry for the sake of profit is made during an infant rise, it yields very little gain;
for one afflicted with illness, prolonged sickness; in a journey, loss; in battle, destruction.
3.1.3.4-3
kumārodaya belāyāṃ lābho bhavati puṣkalaḥ ||
rujo nāśo jayo yuddhe yātrā sarvatra siddhidā ||
At the rising of the youth (kumāra), there is abundant gain; / destruction of disease, victory in battle, and a march produces success everywhere.
3.1.3.65
yuvodaye bhavedrājyaṃ kleśacdedaṃ ca tatkṣaṇāt ||
saṃgrāme śatruhaṃtā ca yātrā ca saphalā bhavet ||
At the rising of the young man (yuvan), kingship is attained and distress is immediately cut away; / he becomes a slayer of enemies in battle, and a march becomes fruitful.
3.1.3.66
vṛddhodaye1nanalābhaḥ syātṛ lkeśināṃ kleśavardhanam ||
saṅgrāme bhaṅgamāyāti yātrāyāṃ na nivarttate ||
At the rising of the old man (vṛddha), there is little gain, and an increase of distress for the distressed; / he suffers defeat in battle, and does not return from a march.
3.1.3.67
mṛtodaye yadā praṣṭā pṛcchati svaṃ prayojanam ||
tatsarvaṃ mṛtyudaṃ jñeyaṃ yuddhe mṛtyuḥ sabhaṅgakaḥ ||
When an enquirer asks about their undertaking at the rising of the dead (mṛta), / all that should be known as causing death; in battle, there is death along with defeat.
3.1.3.68
ojasvarāḥ pumāṃsaḥ syuḥ striyo yugme svarān viduḥ ||
svasvasvarodaye jāte puṃsāṃ strīṇāṃ balaṃ bhavet ||
Odd sounds are male; they know the sounds in the even [positions] as female. / When their respective sounds rise, there is strength for men and women [respectively].
3.1.3.69
garbhārye puṃsvare putraḥ kanyā kanyāsvarodaye ||
yugme yugmaṃ kṣayo naṣṭo māturmṛtṛyuśca saṃkrame ||
Regarding an inquiry on pregnancy, when a male sound [rises], a son is born; a daughter when a female sound rises; / when there is a pair, twins are born; when ruined, a miscarriage; and at a transition (saṃkrama), the mother's death.
3.1.3.70
dyunāḍīsvarayo puṃso puṃyugmaṃ strīyugaṃ striyoḥ ||
tayostu puṃstriyoḥ puṃstrīyugmaṃ garbhe vinirdiśet ||
In the case of both the day and nāḍī sounds being male, a male pair [twins] is born; in the case of both being female, a female pair; / but if of the two one is male and the other female, one should predict a male-and-female pair in the womb.
3.1.3.70.p1

On [the phrase] 'at the beginning of the tithi' and so forth: At the beginning of the tithi, at the starting time of the tithi—at that time indeed, starting from whichever is the tithi sound, there is an emergence of five and a half ghaṭīs in a tithi consisting of sixty ghaṭīs; when an inquiry takes place then, its ghaṭī sound takes on the character of infant, youth, etc. I explain the outcome for that enquirer.

As many ghaṭīs of the lunar day as have elapsed, multiplying that number by sixty and turning it into palas, and when divided by the asterism-fire, [that is,] when divided by three hundred and twenty-seven, whatever is obtained—whatever is obtained is the elapsed sound beyond the sound of the lunar day; the remainder is the sound produced at that time, which is to be known as the momentary sound. In this way, the inner rising of the lunar day is to be known as the ghaṭī-sound. In the inner rising of the lunar day, beginning with the ghaṭī-sound, there is the child-state and so forth; whereas in the ghaṭī-sound, from the measure-sound there is the child-state and so forth—such is the established view. "Concerning whom": He concerning whom an inquiry is made regarding the knowledge of the child-state and so forth, he attains that result, he becomes the recipient of the result. "By that name", meaning by virtue of the sound of the child and so forth. Where no name is mentioned, nor revealed, there the auspicious or inauspicious result to be described is to be stated for the inquirer alone. As when Devendra, not concerning anyone else, makes an inquiry: "Will this task of Vijaya be accomplished?" Then, by virtue of Vijaya's phoneme-sound, determining the direction of the sound of the child and so forth, one should state the result. An example: the rising of the sound on the bright first of Caitra; the palas of the inner rising...
