Chapter 11: General Rules and Exceptions
11.2
saumyāsaumyeṣv etal lagnādstheṣu yat phalaṃ proktam.
This fruit which has been stated regarding benefics and malefics standing in the ascendant and other houses
11.3
tatsamakālagatānāṃ phalavaiṣamyād anekāntam..
is inconclusive, because of the discrepancy of results among those occurring at the same time.
11.4
horāvido jagur idaṃ sutāv abalo daśādhipāriś ca.
Those who know horary astrology declare this: […] powerless, and an enemy of the lord of the period,
11.5
aśubhaphaladaś cāsāmpratam udaye saumyo'pi neṣṭaphalaḥ..
is a giver of inauspicious fruit; and when untimely, even a benefic planet in the rising sign does not yield desired fruit.
11.6
sāmprataṃ śubhadaḥ sutau balanvito yo daśādhi(pa)mitraṃ ca.
When timely, endowed with strength, and a friend of the lord of the period, […] is a giver of auspicious fruit;
11.7
pāpo'piśubhaphalaḥ syāc chalokaḥ śāstroditaś cātra..
Even a malefic planet would bear auspicious fruit. And on this point there is a verse taught in the science:
11.8
saumyo'py atīvacirabhāviphalo na yojyaḥ
"Even a benefic planet whose fruit is to come after an exceedingly long time is not to be employed,
11.9
pāpo'py asāmprataphalo ripunirjitaś ca.
Nor a malefic planet whose fruit is untimely and who has been defeated by an enemy.
11.10
pākādhipo''tmasadanāṣṭakavargaśuddhaḥ
The lord of the period, purified by the aṣṭakavarga of his own dwelling,
11.11
avalpo'phalaś ca dinabhāṃśavidhis tathā syāt..
and not deficient or fruitless, would be likewise by the rule of the day's portion."
11.12
saumyaṃ daśādhipaṃ lagnasaṃsthamicchanti kecid ācāryāḥ.
Some teachers desire a benefic lord of the period to be positioned in the ascendant,
11.13
pāpāṃ copacayasthaṃ na vilagne tatra ca ślokau..
and a malefic planet to be in a house of increase, not in the ascendant; and on that, there are two verses:
11.14
saumyagraheṣu lagneṣu śubham ekāntaniścitam.
"When benefic planets are in the ascendant, good is determined without exception;
11.15
papagrahodaye yātur asaṃśayam aśobhanam..
At the rising of a malefic planet, it is undoubtedly unfavorable for the marcher.
11.16
tasmāt krūraṃ daśānāthaṃ yātur vīryaguṇānvitam.
Therefore, one should place a cruel lord of the period, endowed with the qualities of strength for the marcher,
11.17
kuryād upacayarkṣeṣu na vilagne kathaṃcana..
in signs of increase, never in the ascendant by any means."
11.18
tac ca viruddhaṃ teṣāṃ katham anyadaśāsu dāsyate svaphalam.
And that is contradictory of them: how will its own fruit be given in the other periods?
11.19
evaṃ phalasya nāśo vrajati sarvasya phalali(lī)psoḥ..
In this way, destruction of all fruit occurs for one who seeks fruit.
11.20
tasmān naikānto'yaṃ jātakam avalokya nirdiśet sadasat.
Therefore, this is not definitive; having inspected the nativity, one should indicate good and bad.
11.21
ślokau vṛttaṃ bhedaṃ prāha maṇittho vasiṣṭhaś ca..
Maṇittha and Vasiṣṭha have stated in two verses this distinction in meter:
11.22
rakṣakā vardhakāś caiva ye syur janmani nāyakāḥ.
Those rulers at birth who are protectors and increasers—
11.23
tān pāpān api niḥśaṅko yātrālagneṣu yojayet..
one should without hesitation employ even those [if they are] malefics in the ascendants of an expedition.
11.24
śubhāśubhaphalā yogā jātake ye'py udāhṛtāḥ.
And whatever planetary combinations producing good or bad fruits have been declared in the natal horoscope,
11.25
tān sarvān avalokyaiva prayāṇeṣv api yojayet..
after inspecting all of them, one should employ them also in marches.
11.26
horāgataḥ svabhavane yadi sūryaputro meṣopago'vanisutaḥ svagṛhe śaśāṅkaḥ.
If Saturn is in the ascendant in his own sign, Mars in Aries, the Moon in her own house,
11.27
śukras tulādharagato mithune budhaś ca siṃhe ravir yadi ca pārthivajanma vidyāt..
Venus in Libra, Mercury in Gemini, and the Sun in Leo, one should know it to be the birth of a king.
11.28
janmasamaye śaśāṅkodayopacayasaṃsthitā grahāḥ kecit.
Whatever planets at the time of birth are situated in houses of increase from the Moon or the rising sign,
11.29
te sarve nānākhyā krūrāḥ saumyaiḥ samāścintyāḥ..
all of them are designated variously; malefics are to be considered as equal to benefics.
11.30
yo yasya daśamagṛhagaḥ sa tasya vaśyas tu bhavati niyamena.
Whichever [planet] occupies the tenth house from another, becomes subservient to him by rule;
11.31
yaś cātha paṇapharasthaḥ sa bhavati rakṣopagas tadvat..
and that which stands in a succedent house likewise becomes a protector.
11.32
upacayagṛhopayātāḥ prasparaṃ kīrtits tu tānasamāḥ.
Those occupying houses of increase from each other are declared to be *tāna* equals;
11.33
ādau prakīrṇakādhyāye coditāḥ kārakāś ca..
and the significators were declared at the beginning in the chapter on miscellaneous matters.
11.34
janmeśvaralagnapayor yaḥ śatrur lagnagaḥ sa saumyo'pi.
Whoever is an enemy of the lord of the natal sign or of the lord of the ascendant, if placed in the ascendant, even though a benefic,
11.35
kurute dehavipattiṃ krūro'pi śubhaṃ tayor mitram..
causes bodily ruin; even a malefic, if a friend of the two, brings good.
11.36
bhaven na yaḥ kārakatānasaṃjñaḥ svajanmalagnādhipayoḥ śubho'pi.
One who is not designated a significator or a *tāna* of the lords of one's own natal sign and ascendant, even if a benefic,
11.37
karoti lagnopagataḥ sa yātur bhayaṃ vināśaṃ ca bahuprakāram..
situated in the ascendant, produces fear and manifold destruction for the marching [king].
11.38
papo'pe lagnopagato narāṇāṃ śubhapradaḥ kārakatānasaṃjñaḥ.
Even a malefic situated in the ascendant bestows good on men if designated a significator or a *tāna*.
11.39
tasmāt praytnād idm eva cintyaṃ yiyāsatāṃ kārakatānayātam..
Therefore, with great effort, this alone should be considered by those wishing to march: what has attained the status of significator or *tāna*.
11.40
eko'pi vakropagato narāṇāṃ śubho'śubho vāpi catuṣṭayasthaḥ.
Even a single [planet], whether benefic or malefic, situated in a cardinal house [and] moving in retrograde,
