Chapter 7: The Strength of the Moon
7.2
satya āha gatikarmakalpahā janmagas tu himaguryiyāsataḥ.
Satya said: The moon situated in the natal sign destroys the purpose of travel and action for one desiring to march.
7.3
tatra dehanavate'vajāyate tena karmasu na sādhakaḥ smṛtaḥ..
In that case a person is born under physical renovation; on that account it is not remembered as achieving success in undertakings.
7.4
tac ca tasya bahubhir viśodhitaṃ lagnam eva sutarāṃ yatas tanuḥ.
And that [opinion] of his has been corrected by many, since the ascendant especially is the physical frame;
7.5
tulyadehanavatāṃ prapadya kiṃ sodayodayam uvāca śobhanam..
assuming equality of physical renovation, why did he declare that rising [moon] in the rising sign is auspicious?
7.6
aṣṭavargapariśodhitaḥ śaśī śreṣṭhatāṃ samanuvartate yadā.
When the Moon, checked through the aṣṭavarga, attains pre-eminence,
7.7
janmago'pi hi tadā praśasyate yo'ṣṭavargaśubhadaḥ sa śobhanaḥ..
then even when situated in the natal sign, it is praised; that which bestows good through the aṣṭavarga is auspicious.
7.8
saptamāyadaśaṣaṭtrijanmago neṣṭado dvinidhanopagair grahaiḥ.
Occupying the seventh, eleventh, tenth, sixth, third, or natal house, it does not bestow the desired result if planets are in the second and eighth,
7.9
bandhuriḥphanavapañcamasthitaiś ceṣṭado yadi vilomaveśmagaḥ..
and it bestows the desired result if planets are in the fourth, twelfth, ninth, and fifth, provided it is in an opposite house.
7.10
yasya gocaraphalapramāṇatā tasya vedhaphalam iṣyate na vā.
For whoever holds planetary transit results as authoritative, for him the obstruction result may or may not be accepted.
7.11
prāyaśo na bahusaṃmataṃ tv idaṃ sthūlamārgaphalado hi gocaraḥ..
Generally, however, this is not approved by many, since planetary transit gives results only in a broad manner.
7.12
yasyotsṛjaty uḍupatiḥ puruṣo'pasavyaṃ janmarkṣam āpadam upaiti sa bhūmipālaḥ.
When the lord of the asterisms abandons a man's natal asterism to the left, that king encounters misfortune; / for one marching out, so too when it enters another's sign; when [it enters] that of Venus or the like, there is victory for the marching king over the other lord, but in the dark fortnight, there is decline.
7.13
yāyī tathetaragṛhopagate sitādau yāyītareś varajayo bahule kṣayaś ca..
In the sign of the ascendant, in an house of increase, or in the natal asterism of one wishing to march, there is loss when the lord of the asterisms is waning, but growth when it is waxing.
7.14
horārāśāv upacayagṛhe janmabhe vā yiyāsor hānir hānāv uḍugaṇapatau vṛddhir āpūryamāṇe.
At the beginning of a fortnight, in an house of decrease, loss is proclaimed when [the moon] is waxing; but increase is stated when the Moon is waning, situated at the beginning of the dark fortnight.
7.15
pakṣasy ādāv apacayagṛhe hānir āpūryamāṇe vṛddhis tūktā hrasati himagau kṛṣṇapakṣādisaṃsthe..
Occupyng an house of increase, moving to the right in the bright fortnight, aspiring to a benefic, or situated between benefics,
7.16
upacayagṛhayuktaḥ savyagaḥ śuklapakṣe śubham abhilaṣamāṇaḥ saumyamadhyasthito vā.
or occupying the sign of a friend or a submissive sign, and even in the significator's asterism, the Moon grants the fruit of victory and happiness; otherwise, it strikes them down.
7.17
sakhivaśigṛhayuktaḥ kārakarkṣe'pi cendur jayasukhaphaladātā tatprahartāny athātaḥ..
Even if waning, even if in a non-upacaya house, one may march with confidence if [the Moon] is in the asterism of a friend, a submissive sign, or a significator.
7.18
prakṣīṇe'pya anupacayasthite'pe yāyād viśrabdhaṃ yadi sakhivaśyakārakarkṣe.
If it is not so from the rising sign or from one's natal asterism, one should not march even if [the Moon] is full or situated in an house of increase.
7.19
naivaṃ ced udayagṛhāt svajanmabhād vā sampūrṇe'py upacayage'pi na prayāyāt..
When pierced by Venus or Mercury, there is sickness; by the priest of the gods, death; by Saturn and Mars, danger; by a comet, the death of women;
7.20
bhṛgusutabudhabhinne ruk sureḍyena mṛtyur bhayam asitakujābhyāṃ ketunā strīpraṇāśaḥ.
when the Moon's brilliance of rays is dim for one departing, there is an increase of enemies; when its halo is abnormal, there is destruction of the eyes.
7.21
apaṭukiraṇakāntau gacchataḥ śatruvṛddhiḥ savikṛtapariveṣe netranāśaḥ śaśāṅke..E10
