Chapter 9: The divisions of the ascendant
9.2
ūrdhvā tiryag vānatā syāc ca horā muktā krāntā nāgatārkā krameṇa.
The horā may be upward, transverse, or downward, corresponding in order to traversed, current, and not yet arrived Sun;
9.3
ity etāḥ syur jīvaśarmopadeśe jñeyo rāśir brahmaṣaṇḍasya pakṣe..
These are according to the teaching of Jīvaśarman; according to the view of Brahmaṣaṇḍa, it is known by zodiacal signs.
9.4
ūrdhvā syād yā ṣaṭcarādyeṣu horā bhūyo bhūyo maṇḍale kaiścid uktā.
Some say the upward horā occurs repeatedly in the circle, beginning with the six movable [signs and so on];
9.5
rāśau rāśau prāgvilagnopayātaiḥ drekkāṇais tu prāha horāṃ vasiṣṭhaḥ..
Vaśiṣṭha, however, declared the horā in each sign through the decans (drekkāṇas) that have reached the eastern ascendant.
9.6
sarvaṃ pramāṇaṃ municoditatvāt kiṃ tv atra yojyaṃ dalam eva horā.
All are authoritative because they are taught by sages; but here, only the half [of a sign] should be employed as a horā.
9.7
yasmin sahasrāṃśuravasthito'rdhe tiryaṅmukhī sā gaṇaye tato'nyāḥ..
The half in which the thousand-rayed [Sun] is situated is facing transversely; from that, one should calculate the others.
9.8
dhatte vāṃchitakāryam ūrdhvavadanā kleśād vinā lagnagā
When in the ascendant, the upward-facing [horā] accomplishes the desired objective without distress;
9.9
kleśāyāsaparikṣayāṃś ca kurute tiryaṅmukhī gacchataḥ.
The transverse-facing one causes distress, fatigue, and ruin for the traveler;
9.10
sainyabhraṃśam adhomukhī prakurute kṛcchrād gṛhe cāgamaṃ
The downward-facing one causes loss of the army and return home with difficulty;
9.11
srvāḥ puṣṭaphalapradāḥ svapatinā dṛṣṭā na pāpagrahaiḥ..
All of them bestow full results when aspected by their own lord and not by malefic planets.
9.12
grahadivasaphalaṃ yad eva yātur tad akhilam eva karoti tasya horā.
Whatever is the fruit of the planetary day for a traveler, all that his horā produces for him;
9.13
himasalilasṛjo vināha kaścid yuvatisamāśrayaratnadeti cāndrī..
A certain [teacher] says, except for causing cold water, the horā of the Moon bestows resort to young women and jewels.
9.14
drekkāṇākāraceṣṭāguṇasadṛśaphalaṃ yojayed vṛddhihetor
One should apply results corresponding to the form, action, and qualities of the decan for the purpose of prosperity:
9.15
drekkāṇe saumyarūpe kusumaphalayute ratnabhāṇḍānvite ca.
In a decan of auspicious form, endowed with flowers and fruits, and accompanied by jewel-vessels,
9.16
saumyair dṛṣṭe jayaḥ syāt praharaṇasahite pāpadṛṣṭe ca bhaṅgaḥ
When aspected by benefic planets, there will be victory; when bearing weapons and aspected by malefic planets, there is defeat;
9.17
sāgnau dāho'tha bandhaḥ sabhujaganigale pāśayukte ca yātuḥ..
When containing fire, there is burning; and when containing snakes, fetters, and nooses, there is imprisonment for the traveler.
9.18
nṛpabhūrtir lagnagate drekkāṇe mantriṇo dvitīye ca.
When a decan is in the ascendant, [it indicates] the king's prosperity; in the second, that of the ministers;
9.19
vaidyapurohitasāmbatsarās tṛtīye pare bhṛtyāḥ..
In the third, physicians, the royal chaplain, and royal astrologers; in the subsequent ones, the servants;
9.20
sthānaparākramacintā vyāpāraparākramau camūpabalam.
Consideration of place and valour; activity and prowess; the strength of the army commander;
9.21
abhyavahāryaṃ śayanāsane ca tatpaṃcasu kramaśaḥ..
Food; and bed and seat—in the next five respectively;
9.22
yānāsanaśayyāvāhanāni daśame'pare'nnapānāni.
In the tenth: carriages, seats, beds, and conveyances; in the next, food and drink;
9.23
vāhanayodhāḥ paratas trayodaśe bhavati yuvarājā..
Further on, conveyances and warriors; in the thirteenth is the crown prince;
9.24
jñeyaṃ balaṃ prayātur mantrasya viniścayaś ca tatparatah.
Next to that is to be known the strength of the marching king and the decision of counsel;
9.25
tarataḥ pañcadaśādye drekkāṇacatuṣṭaye ripavaḥ..
Next, in the set of four decans beginning with the fifteenth, are the enemies;
9.26
ekonaviṃśake sainikāmbuśayane dhanāni parato'rthāḥ.
In the nineteenth: soldiers, water, and bedding; next, wealth; next, resources;
9.27
parato'sya daṇḍanetā saimyasyopadravaḥ prarataḥ..
Next to this, the army general; next, distress of the army;
9.28
senācchidraṃ tasmāt senānetā bhavec caturviṃśe.
From that, vulnerabilities in the army; the leader of the army is in the twenty-fourth;
9.29
sainyārogyaṃ sainyaṃ catuṣpadaṃ ca kramāt tritaye..
In the triad, in order: the health of the army, the army, and four-footed beasts;
9.30
kāryaṃ kośaḥ phalasiddhayas traye bhūmipās traye parataḥ.
In the [next] triad: duty, treasury, and success of aims; in the three further on: rulers of the earth;
9.31
dharmakriyātha yodhārcanaṃ ca yātrāsamāptiś ca..
Then righteous action, honouring of warriors, and the completion of the military expedition.
9.32
ity udayādyā bhāvā drekkāṇair ye mayā samuddiṣṭāḥ.
Thus the houses, beginning with the rising sign, which have been indicated by me through decans—
9.33
sadasatphalam ādeśyaṃ sadasadyutavīkṣaṇāt teṣām..
Their good and bad results are to be predicted from their association with or aspect by benefic and malefic planets.
9.34
navabhāge tigmāṃśorvāhananāśo vilagnasaṃprāpte.
When a ninth-part (navāṃśa) of the hot-rayed [Sun] reaches the ascendant, there is loss of conveyances;
9.35
kṛcchrāt svagṛhāgamanaṃ pratāpamṛdutā ca candrāṃśe..
In a ninth-part of the Moon, there is return to one's home with difficulty and weakness of majesty;
9.36
kauje'gnibhayaṃ baudhe mitraprāptir dhanāgamo jaive.
In one of Mars, danger from fire; in one of Mercury, attainment of friends; in one of Jupiter, arrival of wealth;
9.37
bhogavivṛddhiḥ śaukre bhṛtyavināśo ravisutāṃśe..
In one of Venus, increase of pleasures; in a ninth-part of the son of the Sun [Saturn], destruction of servants.
9.38
yad udayati phalaṃ grahe pradiṣṭaṃ janayati tasya navāṃśako vlagne.
Whatever fruit is declared when a planet rises, its ninth-part produces that when in the ascendant;
9.39
subhabhavananavāṃśe sahāyo ripubalabhāgam upaiti yātur atra..
Here, in the ninth-part of a benefic sign, an ally comes over to the side of the traveler's enemy's force.
9.40
yat proktaṃ rāśy udaye dvādaśabhāge'pi tat phalaṃ vācyam.
Whatever is stated for the rising of a zodiacal sign, that fruit should also be declared for its twelfth-part (dvādaśāṃśa);
9.41
yac ca navāṃśakavihitaṃ triṃśāṃśasyodaye tat syāt..E18
And whatever is prescribed for a ninth-part, that will occur at the rising of a thirtieth-part (triṃśāṃśa).
