Thus I have heard: One time, the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in Jeta’s Grove of Śrāvastī.

12.10.3

At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī, at the Jetavana monastery in Anāthapiṇḍada's park.

12.10.4

At that time, the Bhagavat told the monks: "Receiving gains and offerings from people is very difficult; it causes people not to reach the unconditioned state. Why is this? If that monk Śrīla had not craved gains and offerings, he would not have committed so much boundless slaughter and, upon the breakup of the body and the end of life, been born in hell."

It was then that the Bhagavān addressed the monks, “Someone taking profit is a serious thing, not an easy thing, for it prevents a person from reaching the unconditioned abode. Why is that? If that monk Śrīla hadn’t craved profit, it wouldn’t have occurred to him to kill measureless beings. He was born in Hell after his body broke up and his life ended.”

Then the Bhagavat spoke this verse:

12.10.6

「受人利養重,壞人清白行;
師利以得定,乃至天帝宮;

"Receiving gains and offerings from people is heavy, / ruining a person's pure practice; / therefore one should restrain the mind / and not crave flavours. / Śrī[la], having obtained samādhi, / reached even the palace of the king of devas; / but then regressed from supernormal powers / and fell into slaughter."

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

“Taking profit is a serious thing;
It can ruin a person’s clean conduct.
Therefore, you must discipline your thinking;
Don’t take delight in that greedy longing.

Charles Patton, The Numbered Discourses (selected sūtras)

Because he attained samādhi, Śrīla
Ascended up to Lord Śakra’s palace.
He regressed from that spiritual knowledge
And then fell back down to a slaughterhouse.”

12.10.7

"Monks, by this means you should know that receiving gains and offerings from people is very difficult. Thus a monk should train: if the thought of gains and offerings has not arisen, restrain it so it does not arise; if this thought has arisen, seek the means to eliminate it. Thus, monks, should you train."

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

“Therefore, monks, you should know from this that taking profit is a serious thing, not an easy thing. Control and prevent thoughts about profit before they arise. If they’ve already arisen, work to make them cease. Thus, monks, you should train yourselves.”

Charles Patton, The Numbered Discourses (selected sūtras)

12.10.8

Then, having heard what the Buddha said, the monks rejoiced and put it into practice.

English (machine translation) (machine translation)

When the monks heard what the Buddha taught, they rejoiced and approved.
