24.5.45

“Birth as a nāga is extremely difficult to escape;
A nāga gathers together with a nāga.
Nāga, do not give rise to a harmful mind!
Birth as a nāga is extremely difficult to escape.
In the past, as many Buddhas as the sands of the Ganges
Have passed into parinirvāṇa,
Yet you never encountered them in the end,
All because of the fire of anger.
Direct a wholesome mind toward the Tathāgata;
Quickly discard this venom of hatred!
Having eliminated the venom of hatred,
You will thereupon be reborn in heaven.”

“Serpent, escaping is so hard to do,
One serpent and another have come together.
Serpent, don’t have harmful thoughts;
Escaping is so hard to do, serpent.

Charles Patton, The Numbered Discourses (selected sūtras)

Numbering like the Gaṅgā River’s sands,
Buddhas [have attained] parinirvāṇa.
You haven’t met any of them;
That’s the reason for your hateful fire.

Charles Patton, The Numbered Discourses (selected sūtras)

Have good thoughts towards the Tathāgata;
Quickly abandon this hateful venom.
Once the venom of hate is gone,
Then you’ll be born up in heaven.”

Charles Patton, The Numbered Discourses (selected sūtras)
