749.4

At that time the Bhagavat said to the bhikṣus: “If ignorance serves as the forerunner, evil and akuśaladharmas arise. Then, shamelessness and unconcern follow in arising; when shamelessness and unconcern have arisen, wrong view follows in arising; when wrong view has arisen, it can give rise to wrong resolve, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, and wrong samādhi. If knowledge arises as the forerunner, kuśaladharmas arise. Then, hrī and apatrāpya follow in arising; when hrī and apatrāpya have arisen, they can give rise to right view; when right view has arisen, it gives rise to right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi, arising in sequence. When right samādhi has arisen, the āryaśrāvaka is rightly liberated from greed, ill will, and delusion. When the āryaśrāvaka has thus attained right liberation, they attain right knowledge and vision: ‘My births are exhausted, the brahmacarya is established, what was to be done has been done, and I know of myself: nāparaṃ bhavam.’”

It was then that the Bhagavān addressed the monks, “When ignorance is the first sign, it gives rise to bad and unskillful things. The lack of conscience and modesty then arises as a result. After the lack of conscience and modesty arises, wrong view arises as a result. After wrong view arises, it can produce wrong intent, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong method, wrong mindfulness, and wrong samādhi.

Charles Patton, The Connected Discourses (selected sūtras)

“When the arising of insight is the first sign, it gives rise to good things. Conscience and modesty then arise. After conscience and modesty arise, they can give rise to right view. After right view arises, it produces right intent, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right method, right mindfulness, and right samādhi in sequence. After right samādhi is produced, the noble disciple attains correct liberation from desire, anger, and delusion. After the noble disciple attains liberation in this way, they gain this correct knowledge and vision: ‘My births have been ended, the religious practice has been established, and the task has been done. I myself know that I won’t be subject to a later existence.’”
