Thus I have heard: One time, the Buddha was staying at Anāthapiṇḍada’s Park in Jeta’s Grove of Śrāvastī.

Thus have I heard:
753.3
At one time the Buddha was dwelling at the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma in Śrāvastī.
753.4
At that time there was a bhikṣu named Ariṣṭa who approached the Buddha, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, stepped back to sit at one side, and said to the Buddha: “Bhagavat, regarding what is called ‘the deathless’—what is called the deathless?”
It was then that a monk named Ariṣṭa went to the Buddha, prostrated at his feet, and withdrew to sit at one side. He said to the Buddha, “Bhagavān, there’s the expression ‘immortal.’ What is it that’s called ‘immortal’?”
753.5
The Buddha told Ariṣṭa: “The deathless is an expression for the realm [of nirvāṇa]; yet it is for those whose effluents are exhausted that I currently explain this name.”
Buddha told Ariṣṭa, “‘Immortal’ is the name of a realm, but I take it to be the end of the contaminants of existence. That’s a clear explanation of this name.”
753.6
The bhikṣu Ariṣṭa said to the Buddha: “Bhagavat, is there a path, is there a course which, when cultivated and frequently cultivated, leads to the attainment of the deathless state or not?”
The monk Ariṣṭa said to the Buddha, “Bhagavān, isn’t there a path and steps to attaining immortality when cultivated and cultivated often?”
753.7
The Buddha told the bhikṣu: “There is, namely the āryāṣṭāṅgamārga—that is, right view up to right samādhi.”
The Buddha addressed the monk, “There is. It’s known as the noble eightfold path, which is right view … right samādhi.”
753.8
When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha had said, rejoiced, and practiced accordingly.
After the Buddha spoke this sūtra, the monks who heard what the Buddha taught rejoiced and approved.
