769.3
At one time the Buddha was dwelling in Śrāvastī at the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma. At that time, in the morning, the venerable Ānanda put on his robes, took his bowl, and entered the city of Śrāvastī to beg for food.
In the early morning, Venerable Ānanda put on his robe, took his bowl, and went to Śrāvastī to solicit alms. The priest Jāṇussoṇi was riding a chariot with white horses, and a crowd of many youths was following him. The horses, chariot, bridle, and whip were white. He wore a white hat, his parasol was white, and he held a white whisk in hand. He wore white clothes, his jewelry was white, white powder was smeared on his body, and his followers were all in white. They were leaving Śrāvastī intending to go to a grove for instruction and recitation. When the crowds saw them, they all said, “Excellent vehicle, excellent vehicle! That’s called the Brahma vehicle!”
769.4
At that time there was the brahmin Jāṇussoṇi riding in a white chariot drawn by white horses, accompanied by many youths, with white horses, a white chariot, white reins, and a white whip; wearing a white cap on his head, under a white parasol, holding a white fly-whisk in his hand, wearing white clothes and white garlands, anointed with white incense, his retinue all in white, leaving the city of Śrāvastī, intending to go into the grove to teach recitation. When the people saw him, they all said: "An excellent vehicle! An excellent vehicle! A vehicle truly worthy of a brahmin!"
769.5
Then the venerable Ānanda saw that the brahmin's retinue and all his equipage were entirely white. Having seen this, he entered the city to beg for food. Returning to the monastery, he put away his robes and bowl, washed his feet, and went to the Buddha's presence. He bowed with his head at the Buddha's feet, stepped back to sit at one side, and said to the Buddha: "Bhagavat, this morning I put on my robes, took my bowl, and entered the city of Śrāvastī to beg for food. I saw the brahmin Jāṇussoṇi riding in a white chariot drawn by white horses, his retinue and equipage entirely white. The people proclaimed: 'An excellent vehicle! An excellent vehicle! A vehicle truly worthy of a brahmin!' How is it, Bhagavat? In the right Dharma and Vinaya, is there such a worldly vehicle? Or is there such a brahminic vehicle?"
Venerable Ānanda then saw that this priest’s retinue and many accoutrements were all white. After he saw this, he went into the city to solicit alms. Returning to the monastery, he put away his robe and bowl and washed his feet. He then went to the Buddha, prostrated at the Buddha’s feet, and withdrew to sit at one side. He said, “Bhagavān, today in the early morning, I put on my robe, took my bowl, and went to Śrāvastī to solicit alms. I saw the priest Jānusoṇi riding a chariot with white horses. His retinue and many accoutrements were all white. A crowd of people called out, ‘Excellent vehicle, excellent vehicle! That’s called the Brahma vehicle!’ Bhagavān, is there a worldly person’s vehicle or a Brahma vehicle in the right teaching and discipline?”
769.6
The Buddha told Ānanda: "That is a worldly vehicle, not the brahminic vehicle in my Dharma and Vinaya. Ānanda, as for the vehicle in my right Dharma and Vinaya—the divine vehicle, the brahminic vehicle, the great vehicle that is able to subdue the army of the kleśas—listen carefully and reflect well; I will explain it to you. Ānanda, what is the vehicle of the right Dharma and Vinaya, the divine vehicle, the brahminic vehicle, the great vehicle that is able to subdue the army of the kleśas? It is the noble eightfold path: right view and so on up to right samādhi. Ānanda, this is called the vehicle of the right Dharma and Vinaya, the divine vehicle, the brahma-vehicle, the great vehicle that is able to subdue the army of the kleśas."
The Buddha told Ānanda, “That was a worldly person’s vehicle, not the Brahma vehicle of my teaching and discipline. Ānanda, my vehicle of the right teaching and discipline is the divine vehicle, the Brahma vehicle, and the great vehicle, which can control the army of afflictions. Listen closely and consider this well. I will explain it for you.
“Ānanda, what is the vehicle of the right teaching and discipline, the divine vehicle, the Brahma vehicle, and the great vehicle, which can control the army of afflictions? That refers to the right eightfold path, which is right view … right samādhi. Ānanda, this is called the vehicle of the right teaching and discipline, the divine vehicle, the Brahma vehicle, and the great vehicle, which can control the army of afflictions.”

Then the Bhagavat spoke this verse:
The Bhagavān then spoke in verse:
769.8
"Faith and precept are the yoke of Dharma,
hrī and apatrāpya are the long halter,
right mindfulness guards and maintains well,
acting as the good charioteer;
equanimity and samādhi are the chariot pole,
wisdom and energy are the wheels,
non-attachment and forbearance are the armor,
proceeding in peace according to Dharma,
advancing straight without turning back,
going forever to the sorrowless state;
the wise person rides this war-chariot
and crushes the enemy that is ignorance."
“Faith and precepts are the teaching’s yoke;
Conscience and modesty are its long tethers;
Right mindfulness well maintained
Is like a good driver.
Renunciation and samādhi are the poles;
Wisdom and effort are the wheels;
Detachment and tolerance are armor;
Peace and following the teaching move it.
He advances and doesn’t retreat,
Constant is his sorrowless standpoint;
The wise man rides this war chariot
That defeats the foe of ignorance.”
