Thus have I heard:
100.3
At one time the Buddha was staying at Śrāvastī in the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma.
100.4
At that time, a certain brāhmaṇa came to the Buddha's dwelling. After greeting him face to face and exchanging courteous inquiries, he sat to one side and said to the Buddha, "Gautama, regarding the one called 'Buddha,' what makes one a Buddha? Was this name given by his parents, or was this name given by brāhmaṇas?" Then the brāhmaṇa spoke a verse, saying:
100.5
"The 'Buddha' in the world is a name supreme in crossing beyond;
Was it bestowed by his parents, that he is called a Buddha?"
100.6
Then the Bhagavat answered in verse, saying:
100.7
"The Buddha sees the past, and likewise sees the future;
He also sees in the present the arising and ceasing of all conditioned things.
What is known by clear wisdom, what ought to be cultivated has been cultivated,
What ought to be severed has all been severed—therefore he is named 'Buddha.'
Sifting through kalpas of inquiry, [he saw all] as sheer suffering without fleeting joy;
All that is born is destroyed; he has abandoned and stilled dust and defilement,
Uprooting the very source of the thorns of the latencies; awakened with complete understanding, he is named 'Buddha.'"
100.8
When the Buddha had spoken the verse, that brāhmaṇa, having heard what the Buddha said, rejoiced, approved, rose from his seat, and departed.
