At one time the Buddha was dwelling in Śrāvastī at the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma.

At that time the Bhagavat addressed the bhikṣus: "If śramaṇas or brāhmaṇas do not associate with rūpa, they are not subject to Māra's power, do not enter into Māra's hands, do not follow Māra's desires, are not bound by Māra's fetters, and are freed from Māra's bonds; so too with not associating with vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna."

When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus, having heard what the Buddha had said, rejoiced and respectfully put it into practice.
