174.2

Thus have I heard:

174.3

At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma.

174.4

At that time, the Bhagavat said to the bhikṣus: “For the purpose of abandoning anitya phenomena, one should seek a master. What are the anitya phenomena? That is to say: rūpa is an anitya phenomenon; for the purpose of abandoning it, one should seek a master. Vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna are also like this.”

174.5

When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus, hearing what the Buddha had said, rejoiced and undertook its practice.

174.6

Thus, [with respect to] the past, future, present, and past-future-present, one should seek a master—there are eight such sūtras. Likewise, for various teachings, conforming, peace, extensive peace, universal peace, guiding, extensive guiding, ultimate guiding, speaking, extensive speaking, conforming speech, a second companion, a true friend, agreement of mind, sympathy, compassion, honouring the meaning, honouring consolation, joy, honouring contact, honouring security, desire, energy, means, extensive means, capable means, firmness, strength, vigorous body and mind, vigorously hard to overcome, gathering in and constant training, non-negligent cultivation, reflection, mindfulness, awareness, knowledge, clarity, wisdom, eloquence, contemplation, brahmacarya, ṛddhi, smṛtyupasthāna, samyakprahāṇa, indriya, bala, bodhyaṅga, mārga, śamatha, vipaśyanā, mindfulness of the body, and right recollection—each having eight sūtras, are also spoken as above. As with the meaning of abandoning, so the meanings of knowing, exhausting, vomiting forth, stopping, and letting go are also like this.
