184.2

Thus have I heard:

184.3

At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma.

184.4

At that time, the Bhagavat said to the bhikṣus: "Suppose someone’s head or clothes caught fire, how should he save himself?"

184.5

The bhikṣus said to the Buddha: "Bhagavat! He should generate intense desire and with eager effort quickly save himself so that it is extinguished."

184.6

The Buddha said to the bhikṣus: "One may still temporarily neglect the burning of head or clothes, but the raging fire of anitya must be completely cut off without remainder. For the sake of cutting off the fire of anitya, one should cultivate the path of painful practice and slow realization. For the sake of cutting off the anitya of what dharmas should one cultivate the path of painful practice and slow realization? That is, for the sake of cutting off the anitya of rūpa, one should cultivate the path of painful practice and slow realization; for the sake of cutting off the anitya of vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna, one should cultivate the path of painful practice and slow realization..." and so on at length, down to...

184.7

When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, having heard what the Buddha had said, the bhikṣus were delighted and practiced accordingly.

184.8

As with anitya, so with past anitya, future anitya, present anitya, past-future anitya, past-present anitya, future-present anitya, and past-future-present anitya: it is also spoken as above.

184.9

As with the eight sūtras on the path of painful practice and slow realization, so with the path of painful practice and quick realization, the path of pleasant practice and slow realization, and the path of pleasant practice and quick realization: each set of eight sūtras is also spoken as above.

184.10

As with the thirty-two sūtras on "should be cut off", so with "should be known", "should be vomited out", "should be exhausted", "should be stopped", "should be abandoned", "should be extinguished", and "should be brought to an end": each set of thirty-two sūtras is also spoken as above.
