251.2
Thus have I heard:
251.3
At one time the Buddha was dwelling at Rājagṛha in the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove.
251.4
At that time the Venerable Śāriputra and the Venerable Mahākoṣṭhila were both on Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain.
251.5
In the late afternoon, the Venerable Mahākoṣṭhila arose from meditation, went to the Venerable Śāriputra, and having exchanged greetings with him, sat to one side. He said to the Venerable Śāriputra, "I wish to ask a question. Might you have the leisure to answer me?"
251.6
Śāriputra said, "Ask as you wish, benevolent one; what I know, I shall answer."
251.7
The Venerable Mahākoṣṭhila asked the Venerable Śāriputra, "Regarding what is called 'avidyā': what is avidyā?"
251.8
The Venerable Śāriputra said, "It is called not knowing; not knowing is avidyā. What is not knowing? It means not knowing anitya rūpa as it actually is—this is called not knowing; not knowing that the eye is a phenomenon subject to arising and ceasing as it actually is—this is called not knowing. The ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are also like this. Thus, Venerable Mahākoṣṭhila, not knowing, not seeing, not directly comprehending, darkness, ignorance, and great obscurity regarding these six contact-spheres—this is called avidyā."
251.9
The Venerable Mahākoṣṭhila further asked the Venerable Śāriputra, "Regarding what is called 'vidyā': what is vidyā?"
251.10
Śāriputra said, "It is called knowing; knowing is vidyā. What is known? It means knowing that the eye is anitya, knowing that the eye is anitya as it actually is; knowing that the eye is a phenomenon subject to arising and ceasing, knowing that the eye is a phenomenon subject to arising and ceasing as it actually is. The ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are also like this. Venerable Mahākoṣṭhila, knowing, seeing, clear understanding, awakening, realizing, wisdom, and direct comprehension regarding these six contact-spheres—this is called vidyā."
251.11
Then the two true men, each having heard what was said, mutually rejoiced and each returned to his own place.
