277.2

Thus have I heard:

277.3

At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma.

277.4

At that time, the Bhagavat addressed the bhikṣus: "There is non-restraint and restraint. Listen attentively and consider well; I shall speak for you.

277.5

"What is non-restraint? It is when the eye faculty is not gathered and guarded by restraint. Eye-vijñāna attaches to rūpa; because of this attachment, duḥkha-feeling arises; because of duḥkha-feeling, the mind is not unified; because the mind is not unified, one does not attain yathābhūtaprajñāna and vision; because one does not attain yathābhūtaprajñāna and vision, one is not free from doubt; because one is not free from doubt, one is led astray by others and constantly abides in duḥkha. The ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are also like this. This is called non-restraint.

277.6

"What is restraint? It is when the eye faculty is gathered and guarded by restraint. Eye-vijñāna cognizes rūpa, but the mind is not stained or attached. When the mind is not stained or attached, one constantly and joyfully abides further; when the mind joyfully abides, one constantly unifies one's mind; when one unifies one's mind, one attains yathābhūtaprajñāna and vision; when one attains yathābhūtaprajñāna and vision, one is free from doubts; when one is free from doubts, one is not led astray by others and constantly abides in peace and bliss. The ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are also like this. This is called restraint."

277.7

When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus, hearing what the Buddha had said, rejoiced and practiced accordingly.
