310.2

Thus have I heard:

310.3

At one time, the Buddha was staying in the country of Campā by the side of the Gaggarā lotus pond.

310.4

Then the venerable Migajāla came to the Buddha, bowed his head to the Buddha’s feet, stepped back to sit at one side, and said to the Buddha: “It would be well, Bhagavat, if you would teach me the Dharma; having heard the Dharma, I will dwell alone in a quiet place, contemplate with dedication, abide heedful, until knowing for myself that there will be no further becoming.”

310.5

The Buddha said to Migajāla: “Good, good, Migajāla! You are able to ask the Tathāgata about such a matter. Listen attentively and reflect well; I shall explain it to you.”

310.6

The Buddha said to Migajāla: “If the eye sees forms that are charming, agreeable, pleasing, delightful, and cultivate desire, and having seen them, one speaks in praise of them and becomes attached; when one rejoices, praises, and is attached, then joy arises; when joy arises, then duḥkha arises. The same is also said for the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Migajāla, if there is a bhikṣu whose eye sees forms that are charming, agreeable, delightful, pleasing, and cultivate desire, and having seen them, he does not rejoice, does not praise them, and is not attached; because he does not rejoice, does not praise them, and is not attached, joy does not arise; because joy does not arise, duḥkha ceases. The same is also said for the phenomena of the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind.”

310.7

Then the venerable Migajāla, having heard what the Buddha said, rejoiced, approved, paid homage, and departed.

310.8

Then the venerable Migajāla, having heard the Buddha’s teaching and instruction, dwelt alone in a quiet place, contemplated with dedication, and abided heedful, until he attained the state of an Arhat, with mind fully liberated.
