32.2

Thus have I heard:

32.3

At one time, the Buddha was staying at Rājagṛha in the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove. At that time, the Venerable Śāriputra was on Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain.

32.4

At that time, there was a householder's son named Śroṇa who, taking walks day by day, reached Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain, went to where Śāriputra was, bowed his head to [Śāriputra's] feet, and sat to one side.

32.5

Then Śāriputra said to Śroṇa: "If śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas do not have yathābhūtaprajñāna of rūpa, do not have yathābhūtaprajñāna of the arising of rūpa, do not have yathābhūtaprajñāna of the cessation of rūpa, do not have yathābhūtaprajñāna of the gratification of rūpa, do not have yathābhūtaprajñāna of the danger of rūpa, and do not have yathābhūtaprajñāna of the escape from rūpa—therefore, they are incapable of transcending rūpa. If śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas do not have yathābhūtaprajñāna of vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna, do not have yathābhūtaprajñāna of the arising of vijñāna, do not have yathābhūtaprajñāna of the cessation of vijñāna, do not have yathābhūtaprajñāna of the gratification of vijñāna, do not have yathābhūtaprajñāna of the danger of vijñāna, and do not have yathābhūtaprajñāna of the escape from vijñāna—therefore, these śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas are incapable of transcending vijñāna.

32.6

"If śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas have yathābhūtaprajñāna of rūpa, the arising of rūpa, the cessation of rūpa, the gratification of rūpa, the danger of rūpa, and the escape from rūpa, these śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas are capable of transcending rūpa. If śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas have yathābhūtaprajñāna of vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna, the arising of vijñāna, the cessation of vijñāna, the gratification of vijñāna, the danger of vijñāna, and the escape from vijñāna, these śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas are capable of transcending vijñāna.

32.7

"Śroṇa! What do you think? Is rūpa permanent, or is it anitya?"

32.8

He replied: "Anitya."

32.9

"If it is anitya, is it duḥkha?"

32.10

He replied, saying: "It is duḥkha."

32.11

"Śroṇa, if rūpa is anitya, duḥkha, and of a nature to change, would an āryaśrāvaka therein regard it as the self, as different from the self, or as existing mutually within each other?"

32.12

He replied, saying: "No."

32.13

"Śroṇa, what do you think? Are vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna permanent or anitya?"

32.14

He replied, saying: "Anitya."

32.15

"If they are anitya, are they duḥkha?"

32.16

He replied, saying: "They are duḥkha."

32.17

"Śroṇa, if they are anitya, duḥkha, and of a nature to change, would an āryaśrāvaka therein regard them as the self, as different from the self, or as existing mutually within each other?" He replied, saying: "No."

32.18

"Śroṇa, one should know that regarding rūpa—whether past, future, or present; whether internal or external; whether gross or fine; whether beautiful or ugly; whether far or near—no rūpa whatsoever is the self, different from the self, or existing mutually within each other. This is called yathābhūtaprajñāna.

32.19

"Śroṇa, regarding vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna—whether past, future, or present; whether internal or external; whether gross or fine; whether beautiful or ugly; whether far or near—no vijñāna whatsoever is the self, different from the self, or existing mutually within each other. This is called yathābhūtaprajñāna.

32.20

"Śroṇa, an āryaśrāvaka practices samyakprekṣā with respect to these five clinging-aggregates as anātman and not ātmīya. So practicing samyakprekṣā, one grasps nothing in all the worlds; grasping nothing, one has no clinging; having no clinging, one personally realizes nirvāṇa: 'My births are ended, the brahmacarya is established, what was to be done has been done, and I know for myself that nāparaṃ bhavam.'"

32.21

Then the householder's son Śroṇa, having heard what Śāriputra said, was joyful and delighted, paid homage, and departed.
