Thus have I heard:
399.3
At one time the Buddha was dwelling in the Deer Park, the Hermits' Abode, in the country of Vārāṇasī.
399.4
At that time the Bhagavat told the bhikṣus: "Suppose there is a stone pillar sixteen cubits long, with eight cubits sunk into the earth; winds from the four directions blowing upon it cannot move it. In the same way, when a śramaṇa or brāhmaṇa knows the noble truth of duḥkha as it really is, and knows the noble truth of the origin of duḥkha, the noble truth of the cessation of duḥkha, and the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of duḥkha as they really are, such śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas, wherever they go to debate, cannot be bent. Those whose minds are liberated and whose wisdom is liberated can, in turn, make other śramaṇas and brāhmaṇas experience sorrow and distress. Knowing thus as it really is and seeing thus as it really is are both due to past habituation in prior lives, which makes their wisdom immovable. Therefore, bhikṣus, you should apply zealous expedients toward the four noble truths, arouse supreme desire, and train with vigor."
399.5
When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha had said, rejoiced, and practiced accordingly.
