Thus have I heard:

48.3

At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in Śrāvastī at the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma.

48.4

At that time, the Bhagavat said to the bhikṣus: "A faithful son of good family, having gone forth from home to homelessness with right faith, reflects to himself: 'I should conform to the Dharma; I should dwell frequently cultivating disgust toward rūpa, and dwell frequently cultivating disgust toward vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāras, and vijñāna.' A faithful son of good family, having gone forth from home to homelessness with right faith, having dwelt frequently cultivating disgust toward rūpa, and having dwelt frequently cultivating disgust toward vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāras, and vijñāna, attains freedom from rūpa, and attains freedom from vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāras, and vijñāna. I declare that such ones are all freed from all birth, aging, illness, death, sorrow, lamentation, affliction, and duḥkha."

48.5

When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus, hearing what the Buddha had said, rejoiced and undertook it with devotion.
