65.2

Thus have I heard:

65.3

At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma.

65.4

At that time, the Bhagavat said to the bhikṣus: "You should constantly cultivate skillful meditation, quieting the mind within. Why is that? A bhikṣu who constantly cultivates skillful meditation, quieting the mind within, contemplates as it truly is. How does one contemplate as it truly is? 'This is rūpa, this is the origination of rūpa, this is the cessation of rūpa; these are vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna, this is the origination of vijñāna, this is the cessation of vijñāna.'

65.5

"How do rūpa, vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna originate? An unlearned, foolish pṛthagjana does not contemplate duḥkha, sukha, and aduḥkha-asukha vedanā as they truly are. Because they do not contemplate the origination of vedanā, the cessation of vedanā, the gratification of vedanā, the danger of vedanā, and the escape from vedanā as they truly are, they take delight and attach to vedanā, giving rise to grasping; with grasping as condition, there is becoming; with becoming as condition, there is birth; with birth as condition, there are old age, illness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, and duḥkha. Thus this whole mass of duḥkha arises from origination: this is called the origination of rūpa; this is called the origination of vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna.

65.6

"How do rūpa, vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna cease? A learned āryaśrāvaka, experiencing various duḥkha, sukha, and aduḥkha-asukha feelings, contemplates them as they truly are. Because they contemplate the origination of vedanā, the cessation of vedanā, the gratification of vedanā, the danger of vedanā, and the escape from vedanā as they truly are, delight and attachment to vedanā cease; with the cessation of attachment, grasping ceases; with the cessation of grasping, becoming ceases; with the cessation of becoming, birth ceases; with the cessation of birth, old age, illness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, and duḥkha cease. Thus this whole mass of duḥkha completely ceases: this is called the cessation of rūpa, and the cessation of vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna.

65.7

"Therefore, bhikṣus, you should constantly cultivate skillful meditation, quieting the mind within. Bhikṣus! Abide in meditation, quiet the mind within, make diligent effort, and contemplate as it truly is."

65.8

When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus heard what the Buddha had said, rejoiced, and practiced accordingly.

65.9

As with 'contemplate', so also for the two sūtras of 'discriminate', 'various discriminations', 'know', 'broadly know', 'know variously', 'draw near', 'draw near and cultivate', 'enter', 'contact', and 'realize', they are likewise to be expanded in full.
