73.2

Thus have I heard:

73.3

At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma.

73.4

At that time, the Bhagavat said to the bhikṣus: "I shall now teach the heavy burden, the taking up of the burden, the laying down of the burden, and the bearer of the burden. Listen carefully and reflect well; I will speak to you. What is the heavy burden? It refers to the five grasping aggregates. What are the five? The rūpa grasping aggregate, and the vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna grasping aggregates.

73.5

"What is the taking up of the burden? It is the craving for future existence, accompanied by desire and delight, finding relish now here, now there.

73.6

"What is the laying down of the burden? It is the everlasting abandonment without remainder, the cessation, the relinquishing, ending, fading of lust, cessation, and vanishing of this craving for future existence, accompanied by desire and delight, finding relish now here, now there.

73.7

"Who is the bearer of the burden? It refers to the person. That person is of such a name, of such birth, of such clan, consuming such food, experiencing such pleasure and pain, living so long, remaining for such a duration, with such a lifespan limit. These are called the heavy burden, the taking up of the burden, the laying down of the burden, and the bearer of the burden."

73.8

At that time, the Bhagavat spoke a verse:

73.9

"Having laid down the heavy burden, / one should never take it up again. / A heavy load is great suffering; / laying down the load is supreme bliss. / One must sever all craving, / then all conditioned formations are exhausted. / Having clearly comprehended the remainder of existence, / one does not turn back to rebirth."

73.10

When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus, hearing what the Buddha had said, rejoiced and undertook to practice it.
