Thus have I heard:
768.3
At one time the Buddha was dwelling at the Mountain Valley Monastery in Rājagṛha.
768.4
At that time the venerable Ānanda was alone in a quiet place, and had this thought: "Half of the brahmacarya is good friends, good companions, and good associates." And so on. The Buddha told Ānanda: "The entirely fulfilled and pure, complete brahmacarya is good friends. Why is that? Because I am a good friend, I cause sentient beings to cultivate right view, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, and tending toward relinquishment; and so on up to cultivating right samādhi, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, and tending toward relinquishment."
768.5
When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the venerable Ānanda heard what the Buddha had said, rejoiced, and practiced accordingly.
