Thus have I heard:
77.3
At one time the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma.
77.4
At that time, the Bhagavat said to the bhikṣus: “One should abandon kāmarāga for rūpa. When kāmarāga is abandoned, then rūpa is cut off; when rūpa is cut off, one attains knowledge of cutting off; when one attains knowledge of cutting off, the root is cut off—like the severed crown of a tāla tree, never to sprout again in the future. So too with vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna: kāmarāga is cut off, up to not arising again in future lives.”
77.5
When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus, having heard what the Buddha had said, rejoiced and put it into practice.
