Thus have I heard:
79.3
At one time the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma.
79.4
At that time, the Bhagavat said to the bhikṣus: “Past and future rūpa are indeed anitya, how much more so present rūpa! Having contemplated thus, a learned āryaśrāvaka does not look back to past rūpa, does not delight in future rūpa, and experiences nirvid, virāga, and tranquil nirodha toward present rūpa. Vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna are also like this.
79.5
“Bhikṣus! If there were no past rūpa, the learned āryaśrāvaka would not disregard past rūpa; because there is past rūpa, the learned āryaśrāvaka disregards past rūpa. If there were no future rūpa, the learned āryaśrāvaka would not refrain from delighting in future rūpa; because there is future rūpa, the learned āryaśrāvaka does not delight in future rūpa. If there were no present rūpa, the learned āryaśrāvaka would not produce nirvid, virāga, and an orientation toward complete nirodha regarding present rūpa; because there is present rūpa, the learned āryaśrāvaka produces nirvid, virāga, and an orientation toward complete nirodha regarding present rūpa. Vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna are also spoken of in this way.”
79.6
When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus, having heard what the Buddha had said, rejoiced and put it into practice.
79.7
As with anitya, the three sūtras on duḥkha, śūnya, and anātman are also spoken of in the same way.
