At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma.

At that time, the Bhagavat said to the bhikṣus: "Past and future rūpa is anitya, to say nothing of present rūpa! Āryaśrāvaka! Contemplating thus, one does not look back to past rūpa, does not desire future rūpa, and toward present rūpa develops nirvid, virāga, and turns directly toward nirodha. Likewise, past and future vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna are anitya, to say nothing of present vijñāna! Āryaśrāvaka! Contemplating thus, one does not look back to past vijñāna, does not rejoice in future vijñāna, and toward present vijñāna develops nirvid, virāga, and turns directly toward nirodha. As with anitya, so it is with duḥkha, śūnya, and anātman."
