85.2
Thus have I heard:
85.3
At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma.
85.4
At that time, the Bhagavat said to the bhikṣus: "Bhikṣus, in regard to what does one not see a self, [something] different from a self, or [the two] mutually contained?"
85.5
The bhikṣus said to the Buddha: "The Bhagavat is the root of the Dharma, the eye of the Dharma, and the refuge of the Dharma. We only pray that you will explain it! Having heard it, the bhikṣus will practice in accordance with what is said."
85.6
The Buddha said to the bhikṣus: "Listen carefully and reflect well; I shall speak for you. Does one not see in rūpa the existence of a self, [something] different from a self, or [the two] mutually contained? Vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna are also like this. Bhikṣus, is rūpa permanent or anitya?"
85.7
The bhikṣus said to the Buddha: "It is anitya, Bhagavat!"
85.8
The Buddha said: "Bhikṣus, if it is anitya, is it duḥkha?"
85.9
The bhikṣus said to the Buddha: "It is duḥkha, Bhagavat!"
85.10
"Bhikṣus, if it is anitya, duḥkha, and of a nature to change, would the learned āryaśrāvaka therein see a self, [something] different from a self, or [the two] mutually contained?"
85.11
The bhikṣus said to the Buddha: "No, Bhagavat!"
85.12
"Vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna are also like this. Therefore, bhikṣus, whatever rūpa there is—whether past, future, or present, internal or external, gross or subtle, beautiful or ugly, distant or near—all that is not self, not different from self, and not mutually contained. Vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna are also like this. Bhikṣus, the learned āryaśrāvaka observes the five grasping aggregates as anātman and not ātmīya. One who observes thus grasps at nothing whatsoever in the world; one who grasps at nothing is unattached; being unattached, he personally realizes nirvāṇa: 'My births are exhausted, the brahmacarya is established, what was to be done has been done, and I know for myself that there will be nāparaṃ bhavam.'"
85.13
When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus, having heard what the Buddha said, rejoiced and put it into practice.
