86.2

Thus have I heard:

86.3

At one time, the Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī at the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍadārāma.

86.4

At that time, the Bhagavat said to the bhikṣus: "If anitya rūpa were permanent, that rūpa would not have sickness or duḥkha, nor would one have wishes regarding rūpa, wishing to make it so or not to make it so. Because rūpa is anitya, sickness and duḥkha arise in rūpa, and one also cannot have it as one wishes, making it so or not making it so. Vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna are also like this. Bhikṣus, what do you think: is rūpa permanent or anitya?"

86.5

The bhikṣus said to the Buddha: "It is anitya, Bhagavat!"

86.6

"Bhikṣus, is what is anitya duḥkha?"

86.7

The bhikṣus said to the Buddha: "It is duḥkha, Bhagavat!"

86.8

"Bhikṣus, if it is anitya, duḥkha, and of a nature to change, would the learned āryaśrāvaka therein see that it is self, [something] different from a self, or [the two] mutually contained?"

86.9

The bhikṣus said to the Buddha: "No, Bhagavat!"

86.10

"Vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna are also like this. Therefore, bhikṣus, whatever rūpa there is—whether past, future, or present, internal or external, gross or subtle, beautiful or ugly, distant or near—yathābhūtaprajñāna sees all that as anātman and not ātmīya. Vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna are also like this. The learned āryaśrāvaka practices samyakprekṣā toward rūpa; having practiced samyakprekṣā, he gives rise to nirvid, virāga, taking no delight, and vimukti toward rūpa; toward vedanā, saṃjñā, saṃskāra, and vijñāna, he gives rise to nirvid, virāga, taking no delight, and vimukti: 'My births are exhausted, the brahmacarya is established, what was to be done has been done, and I know for myself that there will be nāparaṃ bhavam.'"

86.11

When the Buddha had spoken this sūtra, the bhikṣus, having heard what the Buddha said, rejoiced and put it into practice.
