Samāpatti.
Dhyāna and ārūpya have their own
And lower levels as support; there is no need for a lower one.
Having actualized the ārya's realm of nothingness
At the summit of existence, the āsravas are destroyed.
Accompanied by craving, its object is its own craving.
The virtuous objects of dhyāna are all nine existents.
For the virtuous fundamental ārūpyas,
The objects of activity are not the lower sāsrava ones.
Through the anāsrava, defilements
Are abandoned, and also through the pure of the preparatory stage.
For them there are eight preparatory stages;
They are pure, neither-pleasurable-nor-painful.
The first is also ārya; some say three are.
Dhyāna without investigation is the intermediate \[dhyāna\];
It is of three kinds, neither-pleasurable-nor-painful;
Its result is the Great Brahmā realm.
Below that, samādhi is with investigation and analysis;
Above that, it is free from both.
Apprehending as calm without characteristics,
And as emptiness and selflessness
Is emptiness; wishlessness
Consists of the other aspects of the truths.
Those which are pure and immaculate:
The immaculate are the three doors of liberation.
Emptiness of emptiness, and so forth,
Are another three samādhis.
Two have as object the śaikṣa's \[dharma\]
As empty and impermanent;
The signless signless \[has as its object\]
The cessation that is unanalyzed as calm.
Except for the seven preparatory stages,
The sāsrava \[is\] in the intermediate and unmoving.
The virtuous first dhyāna
Is cultivation of samādhi leading to bliss;
The superknowledge of the divine eye is held to lead to vision;
Discernment arisen from application leads to differentiation;
The vajra-like samādhi at the end of dhyāna,
Whatever it is, is cultivated to exhaust the āsravas.
The immeasurables are four,
Because they are antidotes to malice and the like:
Absence of hatred is loving-kindness and compassion;
Mental bliss is joy;
Equanimity is non-attachment; their aspects are:
"May they be happy!" and thinking of suffering
And joy for sentient beings.
Their spheres of activity are sentient beings of the desire realm.
Joy exists in the two dhyānas;
The others in six, or according to some, five.
Defilements are not abandoned through them; generated among humans,
They possess the three certainties.
Of the eight liberations, the first two
Are repulsive and exist in two dhyānas;
The third is at the end, that is non-attachment;
The virtuous meditative absorptions of the formless;
The samāpatti of cessation.
