Immediately after the subtle of the subtle,
One arises from it with the mind of an ārya
Of its own pure or lower \[level\].
The first have form as their visual object in the desire realm.
Those which are not physical
Have as their spheres of activity the suffering and so forth
Of the higher and their own levels, and the category of subsequent knowledge.
The eight spheres of mastery:
Two are like the first liberation;
Two are like the second; the others
Are like the liberation of the beautiful.
The ten totalities: eight are non-attachment,
At the end of dhyāna; their spheres of activity
Are the desire realm; two are formless,
Having as their spheres of activity their own four skandhas.
Cessation has been explained; the rest
Are obtained through freedom from attachment and application.
Those called formless have the supports
Of the three realms; the rest arise among humans.
In the two realms, the formless
Arise through the power of causes and karman;
The dhyānas in the form realm arise through these
And also through dharmatā.
The Teacher's true dharma is of two kinds:
The nature of transmission and realization.
Those who uphold it are only
Those who speak it and those who practice it.
This abhidharma has been mostly explained by me
According to the established method of the Kāśmīra-Vaibhāṣikas.
Whatever has been grasped wrongly here is my fault;
In the method of the true dharma, the Munis are the authorities.
From the Verses of the Treasury of Abhidharma (Abhidharmakośakārikā), this is the eighth chapter, entitled "Exposition of Samāpatti."
The Teacher, the eye of the world, has closed,
And most of those who attained mastery have passed away;
Not having seen that reality, arbitrary
Bad conceptions have thrown this teaching into confusion.
The self-arisen ones who cherished the teaching of the Self-Arisen
Having departed into the supreme peace, when beings are without a protector,
Defilements, which unrestrainedly destroy virtues,
Freely wander about here today.
Having thus recognized that the teaching of the Munis
Is like a breath at the throat, and that defilements
Are powerful at this time,
Those who desire liberation should be heedful!
The Verses of the Treasury of Abhidharma (Abhidharmakośakārikā), composed by the master, the Śākyan monk (bhikṣu) Vasubandhu, is completed.
Translated, revised, and finalized by the Indian master Jinamitra and the chief editor, the lotsāwa-monk (bhikṣu) Paltsik (dpal brtsegs).
