One hundred and fifty thousand śrāvakas had their minds liberated from the contaminations without grasping. Seventy-five thousand bodhisattvas attained the great manaskāra of yoga. This is the eighth chapter, that of Maitreya. / Then the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara asked the Bhagavān a question: 'Bhagavān, regarding those ten bhūmis of the bodhisattvas, namely: the bodhisattva bhūmi called Pramuditā, Vimalā, Prabhākarī, Arciṣmatī, Sudurjayā, Abhimukhī, Dūraṅgamā, Acalā, Sādhumatī, and Dharmameghā; with the buddhabhūmi being the eleventh—how many purifications and how many factors subsume those bhūmis?' The Bhagavān replied: 'Avalokiteśvara, you should know that they are subsumed by four purifications and eleven factors. Avalokiteśvara, in that regard, the first bhūmi is subsumed by the purification of intention. The second bhūmi is by the purification of higher morality. The third bhūmi is by the purification of the higher mind. From the fourth bhūmi up to the buddhabhūmi, it should be understood as subsumed by the purification of higher prajñā, which becomes increasingly sublime and even more sublime; thus, those bhūmis are subsumed by these four purifications. What are the eleven factors? Avalokiteśvara, on the bhūmi of conduct in aspiration, because the bodhisattva has thoroughly cultivated aspiration for the ten kinds of righteous practices, through patience he genuinely transcends that bhūmi and enters the faultless reality of the bodhisattva. Although he is perfected by that factor, because he is unable to act with constant mindfulness regarding the arising of subtle downfalls and mistakes, he is not perfected by that factor. Through striving to perfect that factor, he also attains it. Although he is perfected by that factor, because he is unable to enter into the complete mundane samādhi and obtain the complete retention of hearing, he is not perfected by that factor. Through striving to perfect that factor, although he is perfected by that factor, because he is unable to abide frequently in the factors harmonious with bodhi as he has attained them, and is unable to place his mind in extraordinary equanimity apart from attachment to meditative absorption and attachment to the Dharma, he is not perfected by that factor. Through striving to perfect that factor, he also attains it. Although he is perfected by that factor, because he is unable to analyze the truths, not lean exclusively toward saṃsāra and nirvāṇa, place his manaskāra of facing forward in extraordinary equanimity, and cultivate the factors harmonious with bodhi embraced by skillful means, he is not perfected by that factor. Through striving to perfect that factor, he also attains it. Although he is perfected by that factor, because he is unable to directly perceive the operation of saṃskāras as it is and have great disenchantment toward it, and frequently abide in animitta manaskāra, he is not perfected. Through striving to perfect that factor, he also attains it. Although he is perfected by that factor, because he is unable to abide frequently in animitta manaskāra uninterruptedly and continuously, he is not perfected by that factor. Through striving to perfect that factor, he attains that as well
