This was the ninth chapter, on Avalokiteśvara. Then the bodhisattva Mañjuśrī questioned the Bhagavān, asking: "Bhagavān, with respect to what is called the dharmakāya of the Tathāgatas, Bhagavān, what is the lakṣaṇa of the dharmakāya of the Tathāgatas?" The Bhagavān replied: "Mañjuśrī, the lakṣaṇa of the dharmakāya of the Tathāgatas is the thoroughly accomplished definitive āśrayaparivṛtti resulting from the thorough cultivation of the bhūmis and the pāramitās. Furthermore, it should be understood as having the lakṣaṇa of being inconceivable due to two causes: because it is free of conceptual elaboration and devoid of deliberate effort, and because sentient beings are intensely attached to conceptual elaboration and deliberate effort." "Bhagavān, is that which is the āśrayaparivṛtti of the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas also to be called the dharmakāya?" "Mañjuśrī, it is not to be called so." "Bhagavān, then what is it to be called?" "Mañjuśrī, it is the body of liberation. Mañjuśrī, by virtue of the body of liberation, Tathāgatas, śrāvakas, and pratyekabuddhas are identical and equal. By virtue of the dharmakāya, however, \[the Tathāgata\] is preeminent; and when the dharmakāya is preeminent, it is also preeminent due to immeasurable distinctions of qualities, for which it is not easy even to offer an analogy." "Bhagavān, how should the lakṣaṇa of the manifestation of the births of the Tathāgatas be understood?" "Mañjuśrī, the lakṣaṇa of the nirmāṇakāya is like the arising of a world realm. The lakṣaṇa of the appearance of the nirmāṇakāya should be viewed as having the lakṣaṇa of being consecrated by all aspects of the ornament arrayed with the qualities of the Tathāgata. In the dharmakāya, there is no manifestation of birth." "Bhagavān, the skill in means of displaying the nirmāṇakāya should be seen as demonstrating simultaneously in all the buddha fields of the great trichiliocosm
