Chapter 9: Secret Mudrās

4.3

At that time the Bhagavat Vairocana surveyed the great assemblies and addressed the vajradhara Guhyakādhipati, saying: "Guhyakādhipati! There are ornaments identical to the Tathāgata and banners identical to the destiny of the dharmadhātu. Because bodhisattvas adorn their bodies with them, they travel throughout the various destinies while dwelling in saṃsāra, and in the great assemblies of all Tathāgatas they make these great bodhi banners their insignia, so that the devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, humans, non-humans, and the like revere them, circumambulate them, receive their instructions, and practice them. Listen now attentively and reflect with utmost care; I shall now explain them." When he had spoken thus, Vajrapāṇi said: "Lord, now is indeed the time! Lord, now is indeed the time!"

4.4

At that time the Bhagavat immediately dwelt in the samādhi of the power of physical harmlessness. Dwelling in this samādhi, he spoke the vidyārājñī of the power of all Tathāgatas' entering the samaya and the matchless samādhi-power pervading all that cannot be obstructed:

4.6

"Guhyakādhipati! Such a vidyārājñī manifests the stages of all Tathāgatas, not transgressing the three dharma-realms, completing the bhūmi-pāramitās. The characteristics of this secret mudrā are: one should use the samādhi-hand and prajñā-hand to form a hollow-palmed añjali, and join the two space cakras of samādhi and prajñā side by side, erecting them. It is said in verse:

4.7

"'This is the great mudrā of all Buddhas, saviours of the world;
In this mudrā abides
The samaya of the Truly Enlightened Ones.'"

4.8

"Furthermore, make fists with the samādhi- and prajñā-hands, place the space cakras inside the palms, and extend the wind cakras; this is the mudrā of the pure dharmadhātu. The mantra is:"

4.10

"Furthermore, with the samādhi- and prajñā-hands, the five cakras being all equal, interlock them alternately, and have the tips of both space cakras face each other. It is said in verse:

4.11

"'This is named the supreme vow,
The auspicious dharmacakra mudrā;
The refuges of the world, the saviours of the world,
All turn this wheel.'"

4.12

"The mantra is:"

4.14

"Furthermore, extend both the samādhi- and prajñā-hands to form an añjali of taking refuge, press the wind cakras together, and place the two space cakras on top, shaped like a sword (khaḍga). It is said in verse:

4.15

"'This mudrā of the sword of great wisdom
Was spoken by all the Buddhas;
It can cut through all views,
Namely the innate view of a self.'"

4.16

"The mantra is:"

4.18

"Furthermore, with both the samādhi- and prajñā-hands, form a hollow-palmed añjali, bend the two wind cakras, and entwine them with the two space cakras, shaped like a conch (śaṅkha). It is said in verse:

4.19

"'This is named the supreme vow,
The auspicious dharma-conch mudrā;
The Buddhas, teachers of the world,
And the bodhisattvas, saviours of the world,
All proclaim the undefiled Dharma,
Leading to serene nirvāṇa.'"

4.20

"The mantra is:"

4.22

"Furthermore, join the samādhi- and prajñā-hands and spread them widely apart like a bell (ghaṇṭā), hold together the two earth cakras and two space cakras, and unite the fire and wind cakras. It is said in verse:

4.23

"'The auspicious vow lotus;
The Buddhas, saviours of the world,
Upon the indestructible vajra-seat,
Awaken and are called Buddhas;
Bodhi and the Sons of the Buddha
Are all born from this.'"

4.24

"The mantra is:"

4.26

"Furthermore, with the samādhi- and prajñā-hands, make fists with the five cakras facing outward, and erect the fire cakras. Extend the two wind cakras and bend them into hook shapes, holding them at the sides. Bring the space and earth cakras together straight upright, and cross the water cakras like a vajra. It is said in verse:

4.27

"'The great wisdom mudrā of the vajra
Can destroy the fortress of ignorance
And awaken those who sleep;
Neither gods nor humans can destroy it.'"

4.28

"The mantra is:"

4.30

"Furthermore, with the samādhi- and prajñā-hands, make fists with the five cakras facing inward, and erect the fire cakras. Place the two wind cakras at the sides, and bend the two space cakras side by side. It is said in verse:

4.31

"'This mudrā is the mahāmudrā,
Namely the Tathāgata's uṣṇīṣa;
As soon as it is bound and formed,
One is identical to the Lord.'"

4.32

"The mantra is:"

4.34

"Furthermore, make a fist with the wisdom-hand and place it between the eyebrows. It is said in verse:

4.35

"'This is called the treasury of the ūrṇā sign,
The mudrā of the Buddha constantly fulfilling vows;
By merely forming this,
One is immediately equal to the supreme among human beings.'"

4.36

"The mantra is:"

4.38

"Dwelling in the yoga posture, corresponding to holding the bowl, place both the samādhi- and prajñā-hands at the navel; this is called the great bowl mudrā of Śākyamuni."

4.39

"The mantra is:"

4.41

"Furthermore, with the wisdom-hand turned upward, form the gesture of granting fearlessness. It is said in verse:

4.42

"'It can bestow fearlessness
Upon all classes of sentient beings;
If one forms this great mudrā,
One is called the bestower of fearlessness.'"

4.43

"The mantra is:"

4.45

"Furthermore, let the wisdom-hand hang down to form the gesture of granting wishes. It is said in verse:

4.46

"'Such a wish-granting mudrā
Was spoken by the refuges of the world;
As soon as one binds this,
All Buddhas fulfill one's vows.'"

4.47

"The mantra is:"

4.49

"Furthermore, make a fist with the wisdom-hand, extend the wind cakra, and in the form of Bhṛkuṭī dwell in equipoise (samāhita). It is said in verse:

4.50

"'With such a great mudrā,
The Buddhas, saviours of the world,
Terrify all obstructors
And accomplish siddhi at will.
By binding this mudrā,
The army of the great evil Māra
And all other obstructors
Are scattered without hindrance.'"

4.51

"The mantra is:"

4.53

"Furthermore, make a fist with the wisdom-hand, extend the fire and water cakras, and place the space cakra beneath them. It is said in verse:

4.54

"'This is named the eye born of compassion
Of all Buddhas, the refuges of the world;
Visualizing it placed upon the sphere of the eyes,
The wise one becomes the Buddha-eye.'"

4.55

"The mantra is:"

4.57

"Furthermore, with the samādhi-hand, make a fist with the five cakras facing inward, extend the wind cakra, and bend it into a circle to join together. It is said in verse:

4.58

"'This supreme vow noose mudrā
Destroys all evil-doers;
When the mantra practitioner binds it,
It can bind all unwholesome things.'"

4.59

"The mantra is:"

4.61

"Furthermore, bring the samādhi- and prajñā-hands together into a fist, extend the prajñā-hand, and bend the third joint of the wind cakra like a ring. It is said in verse:

4.62

"'Such is named the hook mudrā;
The Buddhas, saviours of the world,
Summon all those
Who dwell in the ten stages,
Those with the great mind of bodhi,
And sentient beings of evil thoughts.'"
