The Bhagavat laid down a precept that we must not cross the water in the same boat with bhikṣuṇīs; therefore, it is not permissible.” The bhikṣuṇīs said to them: “The venerables are whom we revere; you should go ahead and we will follow behind.” At that time, in the summer months, there was a great rainstorm, the river waters surged and flooded, and when the boat reached the other bank, before it could return, the sun had already set. The bhikṣuṇīs then lodged by the riverbank, and in the night they encountered evil robbers who plundered them. Then the bhikṣus went and reported this to the Buddha.
