1.1

Thus have I heard:

1.2

At one time the Buddha was in the country of Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, at the Anāthapiṇḍada monastery, together with a great assembly of one thousand two hundred and fifty monks, and a great assembly of forty thousand bodhisattvas. Brahmā, king of gods and lord of the Sahā world; Śakra Devānām Indra; the Four Heavenly Kings—Dhṛtarāṣṭra Heavenly King, Virūḍhaka Heavenly King, Virūpākṣa Heavenly King, and Vaiśravaṇa Heavenly King—leading the twenty-eight divisions of great spirit-commander generals; eighty-four thousand such heavenly beings; and Ālīta leading his sons and retinue all came to attend the assembly.

1.3

At that time, passing beyond one hundred thousand koṭis of buddha-lands from this buddha-world, there was a world named Multitude of Flowers, where a buddha named Supreme Lamp King Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, was currently expounding the Dharma. He dispatched two bodhisattvas, the first named Great Light and the second named Immeasurable Light, and told them: "Good sons! Take this dhāraṇī spell, go to the Sahā world, and give it to Śākyamuni Buddha. This spell brings much benefit and can cause sentient beings to have peace and ease through the long night, obtaining great welfare, physical strength, and renown." He then spoke the spell:

1.5

Then the two bodhisattvas received and held the dhāraṇī spell from the Buddha. Just as a strong man flexes and extends his arm, they vanished from the country of Multitude of Flowers and arrived at the country of Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, at the Anāthapiṇḍada monastery. Then the two bodhisattvas went forward to where the Buddha was, bowed their heads and faces at his feet, stepped back to stand at one side, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honoured One! Passing beyond one hundred thousand koṭis of buddha-lands from this world, there is a world named Multitude of Flowers, where a buddha named Supreme Lamp King Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, is currently expounding the Dharma. He sent us to greet the World-Honoured One: Are you free from illness and distress? Are your vigour and strength at ease? Are the disciples untroubled by adversities such as māras, devas, bhūtas, rākṣasas, bhūtas, kumbhāṇḍas, pūtanas, piśācas, hungry ghosts, asuras, garuḍas, spirits that dry up humans, gandharva-spirits, pestilence spirits, spirits that drive humans mad, spirits that derange humans' minds, witchcraft spirits, corpse-reviving vetāla spirits, spirits that cause illness every day, spirits that cause illness every two days, three days, four days, or up to seven days, and spirits that cause constant illness? Supreme Lamp King Tathāgata has sent this dhāraṇī spell to offer to the World-Honoured One, also wishing to cause the sentient beings of this Sahā world to have peace and ease through the long night, obtaining great welfare, physical strength, and renown. The spoken spell is as above."

1.6

At that time the Buddha addressed Ānanda: "You must receive, keep, recite with fluency, explain to others, write down, and make offerings to this dhāraṇī spell. Why is this? It is difficult for a buddha to appear in the world, and holding this spell is likewise exceedingly difficult. Ānanda! If anyone receives, keeps, and recites it with fluency, they will attain great blessings and benefit."
