10.28

Dhāraṇī of Samādhi-Resolve and Wisdom-Vision

10.30

For this dhāraṇī, in an autumn month, either on the fifteenth day or the final day of the month, enter and make an image of the Buddha in the form of the supreme transformer. Completely spread yellow flowers all around the ground across an area of one pace square. At dawn when the east turns white, recite [it] one thousand times with utmost devotion; one will also be able to behold all buddhas of the ten directions and eliminate all sinful obscurations of birth and death. Practice this for one seven-day period. Behind the Buddha image, paint a bodhisattva named Vajrasthita; in front of that bodhisattva, also recite it a thousand times. Alternately recite one day before the [Buddha] image and one day before the bodhisattva. If someone who practices this dhāraṇī should fall into the three wretched realms, that is impossible. If someone encounters an illness or various evils come to view, recite this mantra three times seven times.

10.31

Dhāraṇī of the Eight Brothers

10.32

Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was staying in the country of Śrāvastī at the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada's park. At that time, the World-Honoured One addressed Ānanda, saying: "There is a Dhāraṇī of the Eight Brothers. You should accept, uphold, read, recite, and expound it to others.

10.34

The Buddha addressed Ānanda: "If anyone knows the names of these eight brothers, and hears this dhāraṇī, accepting, upholding, reading, reciting, and bearing it in mind, you should know that poison cannot harm this person, weapons cannot injure him, fire cannot burn him, and water cannot drown him. All malicious ghosts, sorcerous demons, evil spirits, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and all malicious spirits capable of harming and terrifying people, together with resentments, blame, quarrels, contentions, and lawsuits, will all be entirely extinguished. This was spoken by past buddhas."

10.35

Dhāraṇī Spoken by Avalokiteśvara for Manifesting in Person and Granting Wishes

10.37

As for this dhāraṇī, the method requires that in a quiet place one single-mindedly prostrate and circumambulate a stupa, reciting this dhāraṇī twelve thousand times. One will then see Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, and all that one wishes will be obtained at will.

10.38

Dhāraṇī for Dispelling Sin and Seeing the Buddha from the Sūryagarbha-sūtra

10.39

Śākyamuni Buddha requested all buddhas of the ten directions in the Sahā world to speak this dhāraṇī simultaneously in one voice.

10.41

The Buddha said: "If disciples of the four assemblies accept, uphold, read, and recite this dhāraṇī, they should go to a pure place, bathe themselves purely, put on fresh, clean clothes, and make offerings to the Buddha with fine flowers and incense. One should practice it on the eighth day of the month. After three seven-day periods, sins from past calamities will be dispelled, and one will directly behold the buddhas of the ten directions face-to-face. After relinquishing this body, one will no longer undergo birth and death, and the merits practiced will have none superior. Here I speak only in brief. The person who practices this must not consume liquor or meat."

10.42

Dhāraṇī for Attaining Fruits, Benefiting the Spirit, and Increasing Wholesomeness

10.44

If a good man or good woman accepts and upholds such dhāraṇī phrases, reading, reciting, and copying them, they should read and recite them a thousand times before the Buddha, before an image, before a stupa, or before relics, and drink black rock candy [dissolved in] lotus stamen syrup. If one can recite it a thousand times within a single day, one will attain the knowledge of others' minds. If a good man, good woman, monk, nun, upāsaka, or upāsikā sincerely practices this dhāraṇī according to the teaching in a quiet place, within no more than seven days that person will attain the four dhyānas, destroy the bonds of the desire realm, attain the samādhi of the Dharma-conforming mind that sees the buddhas of the ten directions, be able to transform sentient beings, extinguish all obscurations—namely karmic obscurations and defilement obscurations—purify all the sense faculties of sentient beings, burn away all defilements, perversions, and other bonds of sentient beings, dwell intimately in the path of the noble ones, and also cause them to not fall back from bodhi. They will draw close to all-knowledge, give rise to wisdom not dependent on other causes, and attain the samādhi Dharma-gate of all buddhas that is unimpeded and fearless across the three times.

10.45

Dhāraṇī for Good Protection and Dispelling Illness

10.47

If someone reads and recites this dhāraṇī, malicious people and amanuṣyas within a hundred yojanas will not be able to take advantage of them. Whether it is one's own illness or another's illness, upon reciting it, the illness will immediately be cured.

10.48

Dhāraṇī for Advancing to the Fruits, Attaining Realization, and Cultivating Karmic Action

10.50

If someone accepts, upholds, reads, and recites [it], while also cultivating meritorious deeds, this [person] will enter the first bhūmi.

10.51

Dhāraṇī for Tying Threads to Dispel Sleepiness and Receive Protection

10.53

As for this dhāraṇī, it is a method practiced to eliminate sleepiness. On the fourteenth day, either before true relics, an image, or a true stupa, using various fragrant flowers and two fathoms of white cotton thread, recite it once and tie one knot, making eight hundred knots. If one wishes not to sleep, tie it around the neck, and all sleepiness will be entirely reduced. When one wishes to sleep, remove it and place it in a pure place, burning incense, making offerings, reverently bowing, honoring, and praising it; all devas and benevolent deities will protect this person.

10.54

Dhāraṇī for Empowering Ghee with Mantras to Dispel Sleepiness, Prevent Hunger, and Increase Milk Production

10.56

If a person sleeps too much, empower ghee with this mantra one thousand times and use it to smear the eyes, and sleepiness will instantly vanish. Smearing it on the feet enables one to walk ten yojanas in a day. If one eats it, it prevents one from becoming hungry. If a woman, or cattle or sheep, have little milk, empower water with the mantra one thousand times and give it to drink, and their milk will immediately become abundant.

10.57

Dhāraṇī for Seeing the Buddha and Having Wishes Granted

10.59

If a good man or good woman wishes to practice this dhāraṇī, they should purely bathe themselves, put on clean clothes, and make offerings to the Buddha with flowers, incense, and lamps. From the eighth to the fifteenth day of the month, recite the dhāraṇī during the six periods of the day and night, reciting it one hundred and eight times in each period. At that time, one will immediately see the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, seated upon a lotus throne preaching the Dharma, and he will immediately grant that person whatever wishes they have: whether seeking vast learning, knowledge of past lives, precious treasures, purification of a buddha-land, official rank, technical skill, eloquence, or the elimination of karmic obscurations, whatever this person desires will all be granted. The practitioner of this dhāraṇī should fast for three days while practicing it. It should be done in the second, third, or eighth month; at other times it will not succeed.

10.60

Dhāraṇī Where Avalokiteśvara Manifests in Person, Bestows Various Wishes, and Dispels All Diseases

10.62

How should this dhāraṇī be practiced? One should use pure white fine cotton or fine cloth to paint an image of Avalokiteśvara, his body dressed in white garments, seated upon a lotus throne, with one hand holding a lotus flower and one hand holding a kundikā, with his hair bound high. One who wishes to practice it should do so before this image of Avalokiteśvara. At the time of practice, on the fifteenth day of the śuklapakṣa, put on fresh, clean clothes, smear the ground with pure cow dung, and sprinkle scented mud dust over it, giving rise to a reverent mind. Fill twelve vessels with fresh milk, fill four earthenware vessels with fine scented liquid, prepare sixteen jars of the finest fragrant flowers, prepare sixteen earthenware lamps, burn hard black agarwood incense, prepare four large earthenware urns filled with pure water, and place various flowering branches inside them. Kindle a fire using soft wood fuel. Furthermore, prepare eight hundred lotus flowers. At that time, one should recite this dhāraṇī with uninterrupted voice and continuous wholesome intention; with each single recitation, cast one flower into the fire. At that time, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva will come from the east and manifest great divine radiance; when the fire blazes brightly, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva will appear within the fire, just like the painted image—his body dressed in white garments, hair bound high, and hands holding the kundikā and flower—appearing within the fire. When beholding him, one's mind will be free of all fear; you should know that for this person, the gates to the hells, preta, and animal realms will immediately be closed. Whatever wishes one seeks will all be attained: whether seeking wealth and nobility, soaring through the sky, giving to sentient beings, or freedom at will, all will be attained. Whether seeking vast learning, skill in debate, diving into the ocean to seek hidden treasures, ingesting the elixir of the immortals, seeking wondrous physical appearance, rebirth in the heavens, the divine eye, the divine ear, or the eradication of all diseases and pains. Even if one's bodily faculties are incomplete, or one suffers from debilitating illnesses, leprosy, and all sorts of afflictions—up to having defective physical organs—all will be cured, and all heavy karma from the past will be eradicated. If a man wishes for a woman's body, or a woman wishes for a man's body, it will be obtained as wished. Having made one's wishes at will, one should send Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva back.

10.63

Dhāraṇī for Scattering Flowers at Avalokiteśvara's Feet

10.65

One should take a handful of fine flowers, recite this dhāraṇī three times, and immediately scatter the handful of flowers at Avalokiteśvara's feet, also burning fine incense in offering.

10.66

Dhāraṇī for Mindfully Recollecting Avalokiteśvara to Seek Wishes

10.68

This mantra requires agarwood incense. Recite the mantra three times, mindfully recollecting Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva with utmost devotion. This mantra is auspicious: it can eradicate all past sinful karma, obtain great merit, and whatever wish one seeks will surely be obtained as desired.

10.69

Dhāraṇī for Chanting the Mantra and Rubbing the Eyes with the Hand to Dispel All Pain

10.71

Recite this mantra one hundred and eight times and rub one's eyes with one's own hand; it can dispel all illnesses and pains of the visual faculty.

10.72

Dhāraṇī for Dispelling Abdominal Pain

10.74

Empower salt water three times with this mantra and give it to a person with abdominal pain to drink, and they will recover.

10.75

Dhāraṇī for Dispelling Sudden Poisoning, Illness, and Impending Death

10.77

If someone has been poisoned and is near death, or has already died, whisper this mantra into the patient's ear with empowered recitation, and they will immediately recover; if dead, they will return to life.

10.78

Dhāraṇī for Dispelling Anger (Extracted from the Sūryagarbha)

10.80

This dhāraṇī can dispel the anger of all worldly people. If one wishes to ensure that no one gives rise to anger toward oneself, take campaka oil, empower it seven times with this mantra, and rub it onto one's hands and eyes; the angry minds of all humans, amanuṣyas, māras, nāgas, spirits, and even animals will be eliminated. Even if the humans, amanuṣyas, devas, māras, nāgas, and spirits filling the four continents should give rise to intense anger toward me, one should take a handful of water in the clear morning, empower it seven times with the mantra, and sprinkle it in the four directions, or wash one's face with it, and the angry minds of all who are angry will immediately be eliminated. Even if the waters of the great oceans in the four directions were all churned up, sprinkling it with this would always be able to make them clear—how much more so for human beings!

10.81

Dhāraṇī Spoken by the Buddha for Dispelling Karmic Obscurations

10.83

This mantra can eradicate the sins of karmic obscurations committed since beginningless birth and death, ever since one took on a body and possessed consciousness. Regularly recite it a thousand times on the fifteenth day and thirtieth day of the month, and one will obtain immeasurable merit. This Dhāraṇī-Mantra Sūtra was spoken by Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva; if one recites it once in the clear morning, it will immediately ward off all evils.

10.85

Dhāraṇī Spoken by the Buddha for Empowering Mud with Mantras

10.87

If someone wishes to enter among bandits, empower mud three times with the mantra and smear it on the body. If smeared on banners, pennants, drums, horns, or musical instruments, one will surely attain victory. If bitten by poisonous insects, poisoned, or if there are swellings on the body, smear it with the empowered mud and apply indigo over it, and one will immediately recover.

10.88

Dhāraṇī-Mantra for Gladdening Ākāśagarbha Bodhisattva

10.90

As for this dhāraṇī, one must recite it eight hundred times on the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month when the bright stars appear, burning fine agarwood incense so the smoke does not cease, and using eight hundred yellow flowers; it causes a person to obtain merit. If a good man [does so], he will be secure and peaceful in his present body, and whatever wish he seeks in his heart will without fail be attained. If it is a woman, she will transform into a man. If one can practice the path with utmost devotion throughout the six periods of a day and night, reciting and upholding it, it will avert the sins of three kalpas, and one will never enter the evil realms. One must practice it in the cool seasons of spring and autumn: the third, fourth, eighth, or ninth month.

10.91

Dhāraṇī of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva

10.93

If at dawn one mindfully recollects the Buddha with utmost sincerity and recites this dhāraṇī three times, everything will be auspicious.

10.94

Dhāraṇī of Repentance and Tossing Flowers

10.96

This is the dhāraṇī upheld above by Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva. One should regularly bathe one's body on the fourteenth day of the month, bow and repent throughout the three watches of the night, and when the last watch ends, recite it once and toss one flower, making a total of eight hundred recitations and tossing eight hundred flowers.

10.97

Dhāraṇī for Eradicating Calamities and Illnesses and Neutralising Poisons

10.98

Dhāraṇī for Incanting Swellings

10.100

If someone suffers from a swelling, one should incant it with this dhāraṇī. If one incants medicine one hundred and eight times and applies it, it is also good.

10.101

Dhāraṇī for Incanting Ulcers, Sores, and Malignant Afflictions

10.103

First spread [medicine onto] the sore, and then incant it with this dharani one hundred and eight times a day; after seven days it will heal.

10.104

Dhāraṇī from the Sūryagarbha for Protecting the Eyes

10.106

This dhāraṇī is used to protect the eyes. Reciting this dhāraṇī twenty-one times during the three periods of the day and three periods of the night, and rubbing the eyes with one's hands, the illness will heal. One should generate a mind of loving-kindness toward all sentient beings, repent one's sins before the Buddha, make an image of the Buddha, and copy the Sūryagarbha. At that time one should prepare eye medicine using cuttlefish bone, licorice root, harītakī, āmalaka, vibhītaka, and the like, pounding them together and blending them with honey. Furthermore, roast a turtle's heart over a fire until thoroughly cooked and dry, and pound it together with the above medicines. Having compounded the medicines, incant them with this dhāraṇī eight thousand times, and apply it to the eyelids for seven days, while practicing recollection of the Buddha. By these causes and conditions, throughout saṃsāra up until achieving Buddhahood, one will never lose one's eyesight and will always attain pure eyes.

10.107

Mantra Sūtra of the Four Heavenly Kings

10.108

The Four Heavenly Kings constantly observe the four continents. The first is named Heavenly King Vaiśravaṇa, the second is named Heavenly King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the third is named Heavenly King Virūḍhaka, and the fourth is named Heavenly King Virūpākṣa: youzhe moyini poluomoni botuoxi shanizhanisha.

10.109

All are able to accomplish all matters. He spoke this mantra: 'There is a mountain named Beijiluo, where practitioners of the Way and devas dwell. Practitioners of the Way practice the Path there, attaining the five supernormal knowledges and the power of transformation. A practitioner of the Way named Ahe attained the five supernormal knowledges and the power of transformation. Shanjian, Aduoyuduo, Dihemoujiabi all recalled this and spoke this mantra themselves, saying: "I see where the Buddhas are born and where the disciples of the Buddhas dwell, yet people die untimely, and the lineages of the gods are thereby extinguished. Generating compassionate thought from among them, wishing to make them swiftly liberated, I take refuge in the practitioners of the Way. Great Heavenly Kings who rule over the four continents, listen to my words! I speak the mantra sūtra in order to save the people. Prepare roasted grain gruel for the ghosts and spirits, and then speak the mantra: May Brahmā protect your head. When your hair is let down, may Sheshemi protect it. May Jiandang protect your body. May the moon protect your forehead. May the sun protect your eyes. May the stars protect your kidneys. May gandharvas protect your navel. May Abini protect your buttocks. May Qilishajuli protect your lower abdomen. May the asterisms protect your life. Whatever dwells in the four continents, whether good or evil, may Sumoo protect your spleen. May the devas harmonize, and may Enta protect it. That practitioner Hexitidi—these Four Great Heavenly Kings who rule the four continents—shall protect your family. May Shejiatou protect your knees. May the Eater of All Flavors protect your feet. May Mahākāla protect your hands. Do not be terrified; have no fear here; let there be auspiciousness!"'

10.110

That Great Heavenly King Vaiśravaṇa is the most honored among all ghosts, spirits, and rākṣasas; he commands all ghosts, spirits, and rākṣasas, and then speaks this mantra. Having obtained this mantra, this great mantra, its working is swift: causing exhaustion, confusion, and slumber, is there anything that is not accomplished? It is thus.

10.112

The Great Heavenly King Dhṛtarāṣṭra is the most honored among all gandharvas; he commands all gandharvas, and then speaks this mantra. Having obtained this mantra, this great mantra, its working is swift: causing exhaustion, confusion, and slumber, is there anything that is not accomplished? It is thus.

10.114

The Great Heavenly King Virūḍhaka is the most honored among all kumbhāṇḍas; he commands all kumbhāṇḍas, and then speaks this mantra. Having obtained this mantra, this great mantra, its working is swift: causing exhaustion, confusion, and slumber, there is no matter that is not accomplished. It is thus.

10.116

The Great Heavenly King Virūpākṣa is the most honored among all nāgas; he commands all nāgas, and then speaks this mantra. The working of this great mantra is swift: causing exhaustion, confusion, and slumber, there is no matter that is not accomplished. It is thus.

10.118

When the Heavenly Kings spoke this mantra sūtra, the earth shook, and those who harass the people were all terrified and their hairs stood on end. Whoever knows this king of mantra sūtras will have no more terror or dread. They will not suffer from headaches; their eyes will not be dizzy, their ears will not ache, and their nose, lips, mouth, teeth, tongue, cheeks, chin, navel, and heart will also not ache. If there is swelling in the abdomen or swelling in the flanks, pain in the hands, pain in the navel, pain in the spleen, pain in the knees, or pain in the feet, all such pains will be completely eliminated. Neither humans nor amanuṣyas will be able to harass them falsely; bhūtas also will not be able to harass them, nor will devas be able to harass them. Whether nāgas, gandharvas, garuḍas, qiuhuan, ghosts and spirits, rākṣasas, kumbhāṇḍas, privy-dwelling ghosts and spirits, pretas, sheshe, wuluo, aduomaluo, or gandhāludas, none will be able to harass them falsely. Furthermore, the wind and cold airs of the sun, moon, and asterisms will all be cured and eliminated, their bodies protected, causing all their evils to perish and their hundred illnesses to be cured. Homage to all auspiciousness, good fortune, beneficial matters, and virtuous diligence!

10.119

Homage to all Tathāgatas, Unattached, Completely and Perfectly Awakened Ones! Having paid homage at their feet, I then speak this mantra: may what I incant immediately accord with my wish!
