> "Then the great king said to the lady: 'It is unprecedented! I am not your equal.' The lady said: 'The arising of greed and anger is entirely due to jealousy. Admonish evil with patience; admonish wrath with compliance. Since my birth, I have never contended with anyone; the consorts brought affliction and harm upon themselves. For example, when someone walking at night sees a tree stump, they immediately conceive the thought that it is a thief, or they conceive the thought that it is an evil ghost. At once terrified, they flee in all directions, sometimes throwing themselves from high cliffs, or plunging into water or fire, or injuring their bodies in brambles and thickets. Due to false conceptualisation, disaster comes about in this way. All sentient beings are also like this: they are born of themselves and die of themselves, like a silkworm in a cocoon or a moth flying into a flame, with no one driving them. All evils arise from false conceptualisation; the consorts are also like this. I should not engage in dispute and contention with those foolish people.' The five hundred consorts then came forward, bowed to Lady Deer-Mother, apologised, and repented their faults. They served Deer-Mother as if honouring a worthy or holy one, and as a mother and elder sister. The princes they reared were no different from their own offspring.
