> The six supernormal powers are: first, the supernormal power of psychic abilities, because one travels unimpeded through stone walls and the like; second, the supernormal power of the divine ear, because one understands all various sounds whether near or far; third, the supernormal power of the divine eye, because one can perceive forms in all directions that are obstructed, extremely subtle, distant, and so forth, as appropriate; fourth, the supernormal power of knowing others' minds, because one can know the presence or absence of desire in others' minds; fifth, the supernormal power of recollecting past abodes, because one knows past-life events of oneself and others; sixth, the supernormal power of the destruction of outflows, because one knows all mundane and supramundane paths. The first five are contaminated and rely on the fourth dhyāna; the sixth is uncontaminated and relies on the ninth \[attainment\].
