> The root \[text\] says: First, the Part on Reasons and Conditions is explained. The question asks: For what reasons and conditions is this treatise composed? The answer says: These reasons and conditions are of eight kinds. What are the eight? First is the general characteristic of the reasons and conditions, namely, to cause sentient beings to be free from all suffering and attain ultimate bliss, not seeking worldly fame, profit, or veneration. Second is the desire to explain the fundamental meaning of the Tathāgata, so that sentient beings may have correct understanding without error. Third is to cause sentient beings whose wholesome roots have matured to be capable of non-retrogressing faith in the Dharma of the Mahāyāna. Fourth is to cause sentient beings whose wholesome roots are slight to cultivate faith. Fifth is to show skillful means to eradicate bad karmic hindrances, guard their minds well, keep far away from delusion and arrogance, and emerge from the net of wrong views. Sixth is to show the cultivation of śamatha and vipaśyanā, to counter the mental faults of ordinary people and those of the two vehicles. Seventh is to show the skillful means of single-minded mindfulness to be born before the Buddha, definitely not retrogressing in faith. Eighth is to show the benefits and encourage cultivation. For such reasons and conditions, the treatise is composed.
