> The treatise says: Fundamental avidyā has the greatest power; it can skillfully support and uphold all defiled dharmas, just as the great earth, having superior power, bears the four heavy burdens; hence it is called 'abiding stage.' What are the four? First, the great ocean; second, the mountains; third, grasses and trees; fourth, sentient beings—these are called the four. As is stated in the Śrīmālā-sūtra: World-Honoured One! Such is the power of avidyāvāsabhūmi; among the four stages in the category of attachment to existence, the power of avidyāvāsabhūmi is the greatest, and so on at length.
