> The commentary says: This continuing-consciousness has three meanings. What are the three? First, the meaning of gathering the past without losing it; second, the meaning of actualizing the induction of fruits; third, the meaning of false deliberation universally objectifying. What is the first meaning? This continuing-consciousness can give rise to the defilements that moisten karma, sustaining all the various kinds of good and unwholesome karma arising from past ignorance, and can cause them to exercise the efficacy of bringing about fruits; as in the root text: "It sustains the good and evil karma of immeasurable past lifetimes and so forth, preventing it from being lost." What is the middle meaning? This continuing-consciousness can also give rise to the defilements that moisten rebirth, and can cause already accomplished karma to decisively establish and allocate retributions; as in the root text: "furthermore, it can actualize the retributions of suffering and pleasure in the present and future without error or violation." What is the latter meaning? This continuing-consciousness grasps conditions more broadly and discriminates even more intensely: regarding known objects it generates thoughts of pleasure and displeasure; facing objects present before it, it increases thoughts of love and hate; regarding unknown objects, it fails to understand and falsely calculates; as in the root text: "it can cause matters that have already occurred in the present to be suddenly recollected, and matters of the future to be unawares falsely deliberated." In this way this consciousness links birth and death together, causing them not to be severed; therefore it is called the continuing-consciousness.
