> Having explained the approach of revealing the tenet through general question and general answer, next is explained the approach of subsuming the general to formulate specifics in separate exposition. Within this approach there are two approaches. What are the two? First, the approach of the perfuming of deluded defilement; second, the approach of the perfuming of pure dharmas. Within the approach of defiled dharmas there are two kinds. What are the two? First, coarse; second, subtle. What is called coarse is the mental consciousness (manovijñāna). What is called subtle is the eleven manas. What is the characteristic of the perfuming of the mental consciousness? Ordinary beings of the forty minds and the various \[practitioners of\] the two vehicles, by means of the portion of wisdom of original awakening within the mental consciousness, perfume the portion of ignorance and delusion within the mental consciousness, loathing the suffering of saṃsāra and delighting in the bliss of nirvāṇa, gradually advancing toward the Buddha way. As the root text says: "The meaning of the perfuming of the deluded mind has two kinds. What are the two? First, the perfuming of the discriminating consciousness of affairs, because it relies on ordinary beings, people of the two vehicles, and the like, loathing the suffering of saṃsāra and, according to their capacity, gradually advancing toward the unsurpassed way." What is the characteristic of the meaning of the perfuming of the eleven manas? From the first noble ground up to the vajra\[-like samādhi\], in proper sequence, by means of the pure portion one perfumes the defiled portion, to realize and enter the unsurpassed way of bodhi, because bodhisattvas and the like sever avidyā. As the root text says: "Second, the perfuming of the manas, which means that bodhisattvas arouse their minds courageously and quickly advance toward nirvāṇa."
