> Having explained the gate of demonstrating the characteristics where the designation and explanation are both established, next is explained the gate of assigning the characteristics to provisional persons. Here, the provisional persons are of three kinds. What are the three? The first is the non-retrogressing ordinary person; the second is the one who is partially purified; and the third is the one who is fully purified. These are the three. With what correspondence does the first person take as their own realm? They take the corresponding defilement of attachment as their own realm, just as the root text says: "Furthermore, the coarsest of the coarse is the realm of ordinary persons." What kind of defilement does the intermediate person take as their own realm? They take the latter two corresponding \[defilements\], the initial two non-corresponding \[defilements\], and a portion of the karmic consciousness as their own realm, just as the root text says: "The subtle among the coarse and the coarse among the subtle are the realm of bodhisattvas." What non-corresponding defilement does the last person take as their own realm? They take a portion of the combined moving characteristic and the entirety of the independent karmic characteristic as their own realm, just as the root text says: "The subtlest of the subtle is the realm of the Buddha."
