- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [1.23](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.1699.1.23)

> "The Buddha": this is the fourth, identifying the master who expounds the teaching. Although the preceding has indicated three matters, the correct and the heterodox have not yet been distinguished; identifying the Buddha in this fourth \[item\] only then makes clear the valid and the deficient. Why is this? Although it says 'I have heard at one time,' it is not yet known from whom it was heard; therefore it now says it was heard from the Buddha, not from any other person. However, the treatise says: 'The Bhagavān can sever afflictions and possesses great merit; therefore he is named Bhagavān.'
>
> Regarding "dwelt": there are two kinds: first, external dwelling; second, internal dwelling. As for external dwelling, there are four kinds in all: 1. dwelling in the place of royal transformation, which means Śākyamuni dwelling in the Sahā world; 2. dwelling apart from worldly customs, which means dwelling within all saṅghārāmas; 3. dwelling in deportment, which means walking, standing, sitting, and lying down are all called dwelling; 4. dwelling while not yet having relinquished his lifespan, which means the Tathāgata has not yet entered nirvāṇa. Internal dwelling has four kinds: 1. divine dwelling, dwelling in giving, morality, and so forth; 2. brahma dwelling, dwelling in the four immeasurable minds; 3. noble dwelling, dwelling in emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness; 4. Buddha dwelling, dwelling within the dharmatā of all dharmas. This is prajñā's non-dwelling and having nowhere it does not dwell; for the sake of sentient beings, it is nominally designated as 'dwelling.'
