> Asaṅga's treatise says: 'Why not simply speak of nirvāṇa? If so, it would not be distinct from the provisional nirvāṇa of the first dhyāna and so on expounded by the Bhagavat.' This means that the nirvāṇa of the first dhyāna and so on is a mundane path, and detachment from desire is merely the result of human effort (puruṣakāraphala), whereas here it refers to the result of disconnection (visamyogaphala). 'Why not speak of the nirvāṇa element with remainder? Because it is a shared result.' This means that nirvāṇa without remainder is an unshared result because it is revealed by the exhaustion of the basis of affliction and suffering. 'Furthermore, it is not absolute,' meaning it is not an absolute exhaustion of the basis of suffering. One might ask, why not speak of non-abiding nirvāṇa? It is to reveal what is common to the three vehicles.
