> The word 'Bhagavat' means one endowed with six virtues and who has destroyed the four Māras. The four Māras are known; as for the six virtues, the \*Buddhabhūmiśāstra\* states: 1. sovereign mastery, because he is forever unbound by any afflictions; 2. radiance, because he has been tempered by the blazing fire of wisdom; 3. majesty, because he is adorned with all the marks and signs; 4. renown, because all supreme merits are complete and universally known; 5. auspiciousness, because all the world draws near, makes offerings, and praises him; 6. venerability, because possessing all virtues, he constantly generates skillful means to benefit and bring peace and happiness to all sentient beings without remiss or neglect.
