> Regarding 'put on his robe': phenomenal robes are of three kinds: saṃghāṭī, uttarāsaṅga, and antarvāsa. Among these, the first robe is worn when entering royal cities and villages; the next robe is worn when preaching the Dharma in an assembly; the third robe can be understood. Now, wishing to enter the city, it indicates wearing the first robe. In terms of the Dharma, there are also three robes: first, vigor, also called armor, meaning being able to exert oneself in proclaiming beneficial and joyful matters without avoiding cold, heat, and so forth, just like putting on a robe; second, the robe of gentle forbearance, meaning that through forbearance external harms cannot invade, just like putting on clothing so that cold and heat do not touch one; third, the supreme garment of shame and modesty, having the characteristic of revering the worthy and good, scorning and resisting violent evil, and feeling shame, hence being like clothing. Here, this symbolizes the Buddha exerting himself to preach the wondrous signless Dharma; therefore it says 'put on his robe'.
