> This resolves the first two doubts; within it, first is the statement, and next is the explanation; this is the first. The meaning here is: if a bodhisattva grasps \[the notion\], saying, "I attain bodhi, and there are other sentient beings who can be delivered," then they are not called a bodhisattva, because of possessing \[the marks of\] self, person, and so forth. If that were so, how could they attain bodhi, or cause sentient beings to enter nirvāṇa? It is said that there are nominal sentient beings—just as an illusory person expounds the Dharma for an illusory person—because there are nominal sentient beings aggregated from the five skandhas, they are caused to attain nirvāṇa without remainder; because there are no real sentient beings as grasped, one does not see any sentient being to bring to final nirvāṇa. It is said that there are nominal bodhisattvas who seek realization; therefore the Buddhas attain bodhi, yet there is no real bodhi as grasped, and thus there is also no bodhisattva. Hence the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, fascicle thirteen, says that the combination of the five aggregates is designated by a certain name; ordinary worldlings consider it to truly exist and refer to it by a certain name, but a person of wisdom understands that the aggregates do not possess a certain name, nor is there a certain name apart from the aggregates.
